Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase 2022 recap: Starfield, Diablo 4, Overwatch 2 and more

Refresh

Hello, everyone! Computing Writer Tony Polanco here to cover the big Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase! Be sure to keep a window open to follow this blog for all the latest updates and spicy(?) takes. This should be a pivotal show for Xbox as we’ll no doubt see what’s in store for the rest of the year and the immediate future.

The official Xbox Twitter account isn’t mincing words. “Today is for two things: gaming and gaming news,” says the latest post. The show is expected to run for about 90 minutes. If the above claim is true, then we should see wall-to-wall gaming news and trailers.

Tom’s Guide Senior Editor Marshall Honorof is in L.A. covering the Xbox & Bethesda Showcase. He’s on the line to enter the Microsoft Theater, where the show is taking place.

Be sure to visit Tom’s Guide to read his hands-on impressions of titles he played during this week, including games seen at the Summer Game Fest and at Xbox & Bethesda private press events.

Here is a shot of the stage before the show. This shot doesn’t convey it, but the Microsoft Theater is actually pretty massive. The theater is still filling up but expect it to get packed soon.

The Xbox Bethesda showcase will no doubt focus heavily on Xbox Game Pass. This makes sense given how Microsoft wants as many people to subscribe to the service as possible. What better time to talk what’s coming to Game Pass than during a big Xbox event?

Of course, given all the recent delays, it’ll be interesting to see how Microsoft promotes Game Pass in the coming months. One of the big selling points is getting first-party exclusives on day one. But if those are in short supply, what reason to people have to continue subbing to Game Pass? Old games are great and all, but what about new blockbuster experiences?

Xbox head Phil Spencer takes the stage before the main show to thank everyone in attendance. He said that the event will have “the most gameplay we’ve ever had in a show.” That part is good to know considering how we’ve had many shows filled with a ton of CG trailers. I don’t know about you, but CG trailers are just not that compelling to me.

We have new gameplay footage of Redfall, which focused more on the story. We get to see a bit more of the game’s cast and hear some of the backstory.

This game is effectively Bethesda’s answer to Left 4 Dead, only it focuses on slaying vampires instead of zombies. This title should satisfy the multiplayer crowd.

We get our first look at the new Hollow Knight content. Looks fun!

A Plague Tale: Requiem gets a new trailer. This franchise has been somewhat of sleeper hit since the first game so it’s good to see it get a sequel so soon. Expect to see it on Game Pass in 2022.

Surprise, surprise, but it’s Forza Motorsport! This new installment promises to take advantage of the Xbox Series S/X to deliver what the developer promises is the most technically advanced entry in the series.

The Forza Motorsport series has always been graphically impressive so it’s not shocking to see the latest is another stunner. This one is expected to land sometime in Spring of 2023.

Diablo 4

Those disappointed by the mobile Diablo Immortals will be happy to see Diablo 4 get a spotlight during this event. We learn about the new necromancer class an get to see the first gameplay on Xbox.

The trailer focuses a lot on multiplayer, including both co-op and PVP. There are specific zones for the latter, which sounds like hectic fun. The trailer says the game’s endgame is where Diablo 4 really begins. Expect to see support for years to come.

This looks like more Diablo, which will no doubt make fans of the franchise happy. It’ll be interesting to see what this game will have for those of us who have never given the series a second glance.

Diablo 4 should arrive sometime in 2023.

Sea of Thieves season 7

We get a fun teaser trailer for Sea of Thieves season 7. Expect new content on July 21. And best of all, Game Pass subs can play it at launch.

Ravenlok

Some more indie games, including Ravenlok and Cocoon. Ravenlok seems like a cool action hack n slash game while Cocoon is a cute little isometric adventure.

Persona

Now this is a big one. Persona games are finally coming to Xbox. We’ll get Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 Golden and Persona 5 Royal.

Hideo Kojima

Talk about a bombshell announcement: Hideo Kojima will work on a (seemingly?) exclusive game for Xbox. Kojima has long been associated with Sony and PlayStation so this is certainly shocking news. But the creator has worked with Microsoft in the past so this is perhaps not too surprising.

Starfield

The show ends with an extended gameplay trailer for Starfield! This is a huge tease considering we’re not getting the game this year as promised. With that said, it looks like it will deliver on its promise of being a Fallout or Elder Scrolls in space.

Xbox Bethesda

Perhaps it’s just me, but Starfield seems to have a somewhat stylized look to it. The infamous Bethesda engine has definitely recieved an overhaul. So far, Starfield looks great. If it isn’t riddled with bugs, it could be an incredible experience.

Starfield

As expected, Starfield will have deep customization options. You can create the character you want, both in terms of appearance and skills. In addition, you’ll be able to create your own base and even your own ship. I can see people spending hundreds of hours just on customization alone.

And in case you’re wondering, yes, you can fly your ship!

Starfield

Space battles! I was on the fence before but I think I’m sold now on Starfield.

Also, it seems we can explore a vast array of planets on different systems. Over 1000 planets are promised to be explorable. This is going to be a MASSIVE game.

The Xbox Bethesda Games Showcase is officially over. Overall, it was a strong showing — filled with blockbuster titles and indies. The best part is that we’ll actually see some of these games released in 2022. Sure, heavies like Starfield and Redfall won’t appear this year, but what we’re getting now should keep Xbox fans happy.

Stephen Curry arrived up hobbling right after scrambling for a free ball late in the 4th quarter of Match 3.

Golden State trailed by as quite a few as 18 points in the first 50 percent, but it was a 12-level Boston lead with about 4 minutes remaining when Jayson Tatum skipped a jumper from the foul line. The rebound was batted all over and a few Celtics and as quite a few Warriors went to the flooring trying to safe the basketball.

During the scramble, Celtics heart Al Horford landed on Curry’s leg. Warriors forward Draymond Green claimed he read his teammate scream in pain, and that’s why he pulled Clever absent — defending Curry, but choosing up his sixth foul.

“I saw him getting dove on and that was about that. So I picked up my foul pushing off him because he’s screaming at the base of the pile,” Inexperienced said. “ I’ll take the foul. I’m heading to get him off his legs, though.”

Curry remained on the ground when Environmentally friendly chewed out the referee.

“He stated I dove on any person. Stephen bought his legs dove on. I just asked, ‘Is that not the very same factor?’” Inexperienced stated. “He informed me it was not the exact same factor.”

“I was smooth,” Inexperienced explained, also making use of an expletive to explain his enjoy with his 5-calendar year-old son sitting down upcoming to him at the postgame podium.

Could off court docket distractions be impacting Draymond Environmentally friendly?

“When you permit a staff to get at ease, specially in their home — in front the property crowd, then it’s challenging,” Inexperienced said. “We’ll be superior. I’ll be superior. Come out, win Video game 4. Go back again 2-2.”

How To Watch Summer Game Fest Live 2022

The Summer Game Fest Live 2022 presentation will air across the usual streaming platforms like YouTube and Twitch; you can also watch it right on this page or on the GameSpot YouTube channel. We’ll also have pre- and post-shows previewing what to expect and recapping all of the biggest announcements.

This year, the presentation will also be broadcast in select IMAX theaters. Ticket sales for the live event will begin on May 12. Keighley has also teased that the IMAX partnership will continue for The Game Awards later this year.

What To Expect At The Summer Game Fest Live 2022

Like many of these summer showcases, we don’t know much yet about what to expect from the Summer Game Fest Live 2022 presentation. However, Geoff Keighley’s productions are usually a mixture of new game premieres and new looks at previously announced games. It also isn’t unusual for a game company to formally announce a game days or weeks before the event to tease a trailer premiere during Summer Game Fest or The Game Awards. So we may get a better idea of the line-up as we approach the date in June. In fact, that has now happened, as new footage of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is confirmed to appear during the event.

Keighley’s event also takes place just before the Xbox showcase on June 12. It would not be unheard of for a publisher like Microsoft to plan a two-part game reveal, first teasing a game during Summer Game Fest and then going into more detail at its own event. This year, Microsoft is sharing the stage with its newest (finalized) acquisition, Bethesda, and we expect to see Starfield make a big splash.

We also know that Warframe will be making an appearance, and it’s possible we will also hear about Hideo Kojima’s rumored game Overdose. Other confirmed games include Street Fighter 6, The Callisto Protocol, and Gotham Knights.

Unlike productions from Microsoft or Ubisoft, this won’t be focused strictly on titles appearing on a particular hardware platform, or coming from a single publisher. Instead, Summer Game Fest Live 2022 will feature debuts from any games that agree to showcase their wares at Keighley’s events. In the past that has included heavy-hitters like Death Stranding, Elden Ring, Star Wars Eclipse, and Bayonetta 3.

Though games are a mostly a mystery, we do have a list of confirmed participants:

  • 2K Games
  • Activision
  • Atlus
  • Bandai Namco
  • Bloober Team
  • Capcom
  • Coffee Stain
  • Deep Silver
  • Devolver Digital
  • Digital Extremes
  • Dotemu
  • EA
  • Epic Games
  • Focus Entertainment
  • Frost Giant Studios
  • Humble Games
  • Level Infinite
  • Mediatonic
  • MiHoYo
  • Netflix
  • PlayStation
  • Raw Fury
  • Samsung
  • Sega
  • Square Enix
  • Skybound Games

Day of the Devs 2022

As noted above, Day of the Devs will return and is taking place immediately after the end of Summer Game Fest Live. It’s produced by Double Fine and iam8bit, and while we don’t know much, it’s often been a platform to showcase some exciting indie games. This year marks the 10-year anniversary of the event.

2022 NBA Finals: Two things Celtics need to correct in order to bounce back in Game 3 vs. Warriors

2022 NBA Finals: Two things Celtics need to correct in order to bounce back in Game 3 vs. Warriors

After being thoroughly outplayed by the Golden State Warriors in Game 2 of the NBA Finals, the Boston Celtics will look to bounce back in Game 3 on Wednesday night. Luckily for the Celtics, they’ve been flawless at doing just that this postseason. Boston is 6-0 following a loss in these playoffs so far, and they’ve not only won, but have covered the spread in each of those games.

Celtics All-Star forward Jayson Tatum, specifically, has stepped his game up following Boston’s playoff losses this year. In the six games the Celtics have played directly after a loss, Tatum has averaged 31.5 points per performance while shooting 50 percent from the floor — compared to 23.1 points on 39 percent shooting during the losses.

The fact the Celtics have been so successful at responding to losses in the postseason tells you that they’ve been excellent at identifying — and employing — necessary adjustments. Here’s a look at two simple, yet important, corrections the Celtics need to make in Game 3.

1. Limit turnovers

The formula has been pretty simple for the Celtics in these playoffs. When they take care of the ball, they win. When they don’t take care of the ball, they don’t win. They’re 12-2 (including seven straight wins) when they turn the ball over fewer than 15 times. For example, they only had 12 turnovers in Game 1 against Golden State, and were able to walk away with a win.

However, the Celtics are just 1-5 when they turn the ball over 15 or more times. In Game 2, they had 19 turnovers — including 15 live-ball turnovers. Those errors led to 33 points off turnovers for the Warriors, and that was a major factor in the outcome. The Celtics know they have to be better in that area in Game 3, and beyond, but they don’t view it as a schematic issue, but more of a mental one.

“It’s just kind of as simple as we’ve just got to take care of the ball. We’ve done it, and we’re a really good team when we take care of the ball,” Tatum said after Game 2. “But we have those lapses where we, snowball effect, we pile on turnovers and dig ourselves into a hole.”

Veteran big man Al Horford sees the issue as a correctable one.

“On our wins, we didn’t turn it over; on our losses, we turned it over excessively,” Horford added.” It’s something that we’ll have to look at this game individually and just see how we can be better. … I know we can prevent a lot of those. In order for us to be in a better chance of winning, we have to cut those down.”

Fifteen is the number to keep an eye on in Game 3. If Boston can keep its turnover total under that threshold, it’ll maximize its chances of winning and taking a 2-1 lead in the series.

2. Perform better in the third quarter

The third quarter has not been kind to the Celtics so far this series. In Game 1, they were outscored 38-24 in the third, even though they were ultimately able to pull out a win behind an incredible fourth-quarter performance. In Game 2, they were outscored 35-14 in the third quarter. In total, they’ve been outscored by 35 points (73-38) in the two third quarters combined.

The Warriors are a notoriously dangerous third-quarter team, but Boston simply needs to be better in that frame. This issue isn’t limited to just this series, after all. The Celtics have been outscored by at least 14 points four times in the third quarter in these playoffs, including in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Miami Heat. They were outscored by 25 points in the third quarter of that contest.

Turnovers are part of the problem, as are lapses in defensive intensity, according to Tatum.

“I think tonight, turnovers, and I think sometimes letting our offense affect how we defend, kind of was a little stagnant in the third quarter,” Tatum said of Game 2 against Golden State. “I feel like it translated on the defensive end, and they got going and hitting shots and things like that.”

Celtics coach Ime Udoka seemed to agree with Tatum’s assessment. “That’s been an ongoing theme in the playoffs so far,” Udoka said of poor fourth-quarter play.

“We’ve turned over the ball. Take teams out of scoring against us in the half court, give them some baskets,” he added. “But it was more of the same in that third quarter. We had 11 for 18 points in that first half and gave up five or six more in that quarter. Kind of blew it open, and that hampered our offense, as well.”

Since turnovers are also a big factor in Boston’s third-quarter struggles, it seems that simply cutting back on them could solve a lot of the problems that have plagued them so far this postseason. Taking care of the ball should be the top priority for the Celtics heading into Game 3.

Featured Game | Golden State Warriors vs. Boston Celtics

Why the Celtics can cover

Boston is riding a huge wave of momentum after outscoring Golden State 40-16 in the fourth quarter on Thursday, drilling nine 3-pointers in the final frame. The betting market is giving bettors a chance to get even more value with the Celtics in Game 2, moving the spread from -3.5 to -4.5. Boston has now covered the spread in 13 of its last 14 road games, becoming the first team to beat the Warriors at home during the 2022 NBA playoffs.

The Celtics were able to pull off the upset despite a terrible performance from their superstar, which bodes well for their chances to add another win on Sunday. Jayson Tatum went just 3 of 17 from the floor, while Steph Curry finished with 34 points for the Warriors. Boston has covered the spread at a 5-0-1 clip in the last six meetings between these teams.

Why the Warriors can cover

Two-time MVP Curry is an elite sharpshooter from all over the floor as he has deep range and can catch fire in a hurry. The eight-time All-Star has the arsenal to torch anyone lined up against him and that was on full display in Game 1. Curry exploded for 21 points and shot 6-for-7 from three in the first quarter. He ended up finishing the matchup with 34 points, five rebounds, and five assists.

Guard Klay Thompson is another knockdown shooter on the perimeter. Thompson has played in plenty of big-time games and knows what that pressure feels like that. The five-time All-Star can heat up in a blink of an eye and Golden State will need that type of performance in Game 2. Thompson has an effortless shooting stroke with good defensive instincts. He produced 15 points and shot 3-for-7 from deep in Game 1.

How to make Warriors vs. Celtics picks

For Game 2 of the NBA Finals 2022, Cimini is leaning over on the point total, but he also says a critical X-factor makes one side of the spread a must-back. He’s only sharing what it is, and which side of the Warriors vs. Celtics spread to back, at SportsLine.

So who wins Celtics vs. Warriors? And which side of the spread is a must-back? Visit SportsLine now to see which side of the Warriors vs. Celtics spread you need to jump on, all from the expert that has crushed his NBA picks, and find out.
