Sharing is not a new concept, humans live in social groups and thrive on social interaction — this forms part of human nature.

Yet “[s]ocial media have transformed the way we understand the world around us by changing the way we access, share, understand — and misunderstand — information”, Dr. Adrian Ward, assistant professor of marketing at the University of Texas, told Medical News Today.

An estimated 70{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} of North Americans use social media to connect with each other and share information. In the age of social media with constant access to more information from a wider range and variety of sources, why do people share, and how does it affect them?

According to a study conducted by a customer insight group for The New York Times, sharing online helps people feel more involved in the world.

The study of 2,500 users showed that 49{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} of participants aimed to change the opinions of others or encourage action, with 68{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} aiming to give people a better sense of who they are and what they care about.

How does people’s sharing impact what they know or what they think they know? This has been the focus of recent research by Prof. Susan M. Broniarczyk, professor of marketing, and Dr. Adrian Ward, both at McCombs School of Business, University of Texas.

“Our research shows that this new information-sharing environment may also be transforming the way we understand ourselves. When we share information on social media, we aren’t just sharing news — we are also sharing an image of who we are and what we know. Our research shows that the signals our behavior sends to others can influence the way we see ourselves; we begin to see ourselves as we believe we are seen by others.”

The new research, which appears in the Journal of Consumer Psychology, found that simply sharing information gives people confidence, making them feel more knowledgeable about the information shared even if they have only read the headline.

In a number of studies, scientists investigated the impact of “sharing without reading” and its effect on subjective knowledge, meaning what people think they know, and objective knowledge — what people actually know.

In early studies, participants listed articles they had shared on Facebook and how much of each article they had read before sharing. Only 28{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} of participants described reading the full article before sharing, and 25{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} admitted to only having read a couple of lines or none at all.

Another early study by the same researchers found that people associated social media sharing with knowledge, and felt that sharing made them look more knowledgeable.

To understand how sharing affects a person’s subjective and objective knowledge, the researchers gave a group of students the opportunity to read and share a range of news articles.

The students then had to rate their subjective knowledge of each article before completing three multiple-choice questions that assessed their objective knowledge.

Finally, the researchers asked the participants if they had read the article or not. The researchers found that sharing was linked to a higher level of subjective knowledge even if students had not read the article.

In a final study, 300 participants were asked to read an article about investing for beginners before being assigned to either share it on their personal Facebook profile or not.

Next, the researchers gave them a retirement planning exercise, where after receiving personal investment portfolio recommendations, they were asked to allocate $10,000 into stocks and/ or bonds.

People who shared opted for investments associated with greater risk, suggesting that sharing not only affects what people think they know but also how they may act.

Speaking to MNT, Dr. Dam Hee Kim, assistant professor of communication at the University of Arizona, who was not involved in the study, commented that the increased desire to take risks in the financial exercise “is concerning considering that they think they are knowledgeable after news sharing, but actually are not knowledgeable.”

“In the end, riskier investments may do more harm to the sharers,” said Dr. Kim.

Sharing with friends also showed an increase in subjective knowledge when compared to sharing with strangers, and interestingly, where participants were forced to share, there was no increase in subjective knowledge.

Social media is a powerful tool for making people feel more knowledgeable and may have benefits for people’s mental health. “[F]eeling smart can improve self-esteem,” commented Dr. Ward.

Indeed, studies have shown that news sharing can lead to social learning and political engagement encouraging people to take more active roles in their communities.

Dr. Kim agreed that sharing may be beneficial, explaining that sharers “can feel empowered as aware and involved members of a community or even opinion leaders.”

“In a way, news sharers are learning to become good active members of a community,” she noted.

However, Dr. Ward cautioned that there may also be negative consequences.

“[P]eople’s inflated sense of personal knowledge could lead to interpersonal conflict; if people on both sides of controversial issues are highly confident in their views, but lack [a] deep understanding of the issues, it may be even more difficult to find common ground,” he pointed out.

In the community, the findings may raise concern — sharing articles that have not been read may encourage the spread of fake news and misinformation.

“Given that news sharers gain subjective — not necessarily objective — knowledge, and these people are likely to further share news, it is possible that they contribute to the spread of false or misleading information,” said Dr. Kim.

Dr. Ward echoed these thoughts, explaining:

“[I]f people do not read what they share, they may be more likely to share fake news without even realizing it […] [P]eople feel more knowledgeable about what they share, [and] sharing news on social media may cause people to become more entrenched in their views — even if these views are primarily supported by fake news or misinformation. When we feel like we already know about a topic, we are less likely to try to learn or read more about the topic — so people who share fake news may be less likely to encounter new information that challenges their existing beliefs.”

Prof. Broniarczyk agrees: “If people feel more knowledgeable on a topic, they also feel they maybe don’t need to read or learn additional information on that topic.”

Dr. Ward outlined that the next step for this work is to understand “[b]eyond financial decisions, what other behaviors might be affected — and how?”

He went on to note that “it is important to understand how to combat the tendency to share without reading and the inflated sense of knowledge that comes along with this behavior.”

“Feeling more knowledgeable than we really are may have harmful consequences not just for people’s personal behavior, but also for the ability to communicate with others and function as a society,” Dr. Ward told us.

While Paxlovid has been, in general, very successful in treating COVID-19, the press coverage has left some with questions about Paxlovid and the chances of their experiencing a rebound.

Medical News Today asked the experts six key questions about COVID-19 rebounds.

Dr. Robert Wachter, professor of medicine and chair of the Department of Medicine in the School of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, explained rebound to MNT.

“Rebound,” he said, “is the phenomenon of getting better from your COVID infection, both in terms of symptoms and your rapid test going from positive to negative, and then relapsing later — usually with both the return of symptoms and the return of a positive rapid test, which means that the amount of virus you’re carrying has increased.”

“It’s not entirely clear why it happens, but we think it’s mostly that the virus and your immune system are in a tug of war,” added dr. Wachter.

“Your immune system wins for a while — which is why you improve — and then the virus turns things around to take the lead. Eventually, your immune system kicks back in and, in virtually all cases, you improve again,” he noted.

Dr. Amesh Adajla, assistant professor at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health told us that “[i]t appears to be more frequently reported in the past several months [versus] earlier in the pandemic.”

“We know that COVID symptoms fluctuate a lot, so rebound is not really new,” said Dr. Davey Smith, professor of medicine at the University of California, San Diego.

“People have been more in-tune with this after treatment with Paxlovid. Rebound of symptoms is even common for people who were not treated with anything,” he pointed out.

Dr. Rong Xu is a professor of biomedical informatics and the director of the Center for AI in Drug Discovery in the School of Medicine at Case Western University.

In answer to this question, she told MNT:

“There are many anecdotal reports [about COVID-19 rebounds] — e.g., on social media — and CDC-issued health advisories. Therefore, it is not a new phenomenon, and it is also not unique for Paxlovid. But there is a dearth of data in systematically characterizing COVID-19 rebound[s]. In addition, our recent study shows that COVID-19 rebound is more likely to happen for BA.5 than the BA.2.12.1 subvariant.”

“They did,” said Dr. Wachter, “but in a very small percentage of people.” Dr. Smith agreed, noting that “[c]linical trials have shown this phenomenon since the beginning.”

“In the early tests of Paxlovid,” continued Dr. Wachter, “rebound was seen in about 2{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} of people who were on the drug, but in a similar fraction of people who weren’t. So, it didn’t seem like a big deal.”

“Of course, real-life experience has been different; while the published evidence still cites a relatively low probability of rebound with Paxlovid, most of us believe it is far more common — like in the 10-20{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} range,” he added.

“There may be differences between trial population and real-world patients,” said Dr. Xu. “Omicron subvariants may also play some role, as our recent study indicates.”

Dr. Adajla also suggested “that [the lack of clear information about the prevalence of rebound symptoms] may be a result of trials occurring during times when non-Omicron variants were prevalent.”

Dr. Adajla pointed out that while “[r]ebound is anecdotally being reported in users of Paxlovid, […] it can occur in individuals who are not prescribed any antiviral as well.”

“We do not know who is at greater risk for rebound of symptoms. Looks like it can happen to anyone,” said Dr. Smith.

According to Dr. Wachter:

“There are no great demographic or disease predictors — young/ old, vaccinated or not, severe initial case or milder. Seems to be pretty random. Some people think there may be some connection to starting on Paxlovid quickly, which has led some to recommend waiting a few days. (Paxlovid works as long as you start it by day 5.) But there’s no strong evidence backing this up.”

Dr. Xu pointed out, however, that the research in which she is involved suggests otherwise:

“Our data show that patients with underlying medical conditions — e.g., heart diseases, cancer, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, immune-related diseases — are more likely to have COVID-19 rebound.”

“Rebound can happen 2 and 8 days, or even 30 days, after the last course of the drug,” she added.

“Great question! We don’t know yet, and we are actively investigating it,” answered Dr. Xu.

According to Dr. Wachter, “[an] average case lasts about 5 days [and] “[i]t is virtually always mild.”

“Only a handful of rebound cases that required hospitalization have been reported, and I’ve never heard of a rebound case leading to death,” he told us. “The downsides are: you’re infectious again, so [you] should go back into isolation, you may feel crummy again, [and that] it is unclear whether rebound is a risk factor for long COVID, but it might be.”

There may be some occasional cases of long-lasting rebound, but according to Dr. Wachter, these are likely very rare:

“I’ve heard of one person who continued to test positive for 20 days, but that’s distinctly unusual. Typical is that someone turns negative on about day 8, turns positive again (rebound) on day 12-13, and then turns negative (and stays negative) on day 18 or so.”

Dr. Smith largely agreed that rebound COVID-19 tends to be mild and short-lived. “It differs for everyone, but usually only lasts a few days and is generally mild,” he noted, while also admitting that “Dr. Fauci said that his rebound was more severe than his original symptoms.”

“Maybe,” said Dr. Smith, “but this needs to be studied before it is widely recommended.”

“Likely,” said Dr. Xu, “but we don’t know yet,” pointing again to the lack of good data.

“Longer courses of Paxlovid are being studied,” noted Dr. Adajla, “to see if [the] duration of antiviral treatment has any bearing on the incidence of this phenomenon, but much more work is necessary to understand what governs rebound.”

Dr. Wachter expressed concern that the answer to this question remains unknown at the time of writing.

He did not mince words about this issue: “I think it’s scandalous that this hasn’t yet been tested in a clinical trial. This is really the big question.”

Still, he surmised that “a 7- or 10-day course [of Paxlovid] would prevent most cases of rebound, but there has not yet been a reported clinical trial.”

For the study, researchers selected 28 children from Cambridgeshire, England, ages 8 to 13 years old. Among the participants, 21 were female and 7 were male with an average age of 9.5.

Children who had already been diagnosed with neurological or psychological disorders were excluded from the research.

First, the participants answered about their well-being on an online questionnaire. Additionally, parents or guardians answered a questionnaire about the well-being of their children.

Later, the young participants spent 45 minutes with a Nao robot, created by SoftBank Robotics. The robot then administered the Short Mood and Feelings Questionnaire, which measures symptoms of depression, and the Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale.

Additionally, the robot asked the children about happy and sad memories they experienced over the last week and administered a task where children were shown pictures and then asked questions about them.

The researchers found that questionnaires conducted by robots were more likely to identify cases of well-being anomalies than the children’s online self-reports or parent or guardian reports.

Some participants shared information with the robot that they did not share via self-report.

Study co-author Prof. Hatice Gunes, Ph.D., a professor of affective intelligence and robotics and head of the Affective Intelligence and Robotics Lab at the University of Cambridge, explained to Medical News Today that among participants, “the group that might have some well-being related concerns” were more likely to provide negative response ratings during the robot-led questionnaires.

“The interesting finding here is when they interact with the robot their responses become more negative,” Prof. Gunes noted.

Socially assistive robots have previously demonstrated potential as a tool to improve the accessibility of care, the researchers explain in their paper. For instance, a 2020 study illustrated that robots may be helpful in assessing risk factors for autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

“Robots have been used for various tasks — and they’ve been shown to be effective in certain things because they have this physical embodiment, unlike a mobile phone or a virtual character or even videos,” Prof. Gunes said.

And despite the potential dangers of allowing a child too much time with an electronic device, working one-on-one with a robot is different from screentime, Prof. Gunes noted.

“This is a physical interaction, right? So, it’s not virtual. It’s not a video — they’re physically interacting with a physical entity,” she said.

Prof. Gunes also pointed to a key aspect of the study: the “child-like robot” used for the research was less than 2 feet tall.

“Here we have a child-looking and child-sounding robot. “In such situations, children actually see the robot more as a peer. So, it’s not an adult that is trying to get some information out of them.”

Diane Hodge, Ph.D., LCSW, director of the school of social work at Radford University in Virginia, said she’s used puppets and dolls to help make her pediatric clients feel more at ease while she worked as a clinical social worker earlier in her career.

Robots, she told MNT, are the 21st-century equivalent of those puppets.

“I’m all about technology that really enhances and helps people,” Hodge said. “More kids today are just so used to it that they expect it.”

Hodge also pointed out that in the study, the researchers did not use a robot to deliver mental health care interventions, but rather, to assess the well-being of children. “This is just to get people access,” she said.

Hodge also highlighted how the Nao robot was able to successfully identify more “well-being-related anomalies” in children compared to those revealed by humans. “[That] shows that if we had done nothing, right, they wouldn’t have caught that,” she said.

After analyzing health data of more than 5,000 older postmenopausal women, the researchers found that higher levels of light, moderate, or vigorous physical activity correlated with a lower risk of all-cause deaths. The findings expanded on prior studies that have shown that more sedentary time carries greater health risks.

These associations persisted across varying levels of genetic potential for living longer.

“[The] findings support the importance of higher physical activity (PA) and lower sedentary time (ST) for reducing mortality risk in older women, regardless of [their] genetic predisposition for longevity,” the researchers wrote.

Their prospective study was recently published in the Journal of Aging and Physical Activity.

From 2012 to 2020, the UC San Diego researchers analyzed data on the physical activity of more than 5,000 ambulatory women ages 63 and older.

Lead author Alexander Posis, MPH, a doctoral student in the San Diego State University/UC San Diego Joint Doctoral Program in Public Health, explained the significance of the OPACH study to Medical News Today:

The UC San Diego cohort developed a weighted GRS based on three SNPs strongly associated with long life. This metric compared survival to age 90 versus death before age 90.

Covariates and comorbidities

Covariates, or characteristics among the study’s participants, included age, education level, body mass index (BMI), self-reported health status, and other details. Participants’ race was also a factor but was limited to white, Black, and Hispanic ethnicities.

The study also analyzed chronic conditions present before or after participation, including cancer, depression, frequent falls, and cardiovascular disease.

Of the 5,446 women in the present study’s sample, 1,022 passed away during follow-up.

Historically, women have been significantly underrepresented in clinical trials. Using data from the OPACH study was a step forward in inclusive research.

However, the resulting lack of male participation created a limitation on the UC San Diego study’s findings.

“Based on the design of our study, we were not able to make any inferences on men. But we hope that future studies will examine these associations in study cohorts that include men as well as those in younger age groups,” Posis told MNT.

Dr. Scott Kaiser, a geriatrician and director of Geriatric Cognitive Health for the Pacific Neuroscience Institute at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, CA, told MNT the work is a “well-done study [… with] a lot of great data.” However, he cautioned that the current study is an association study and not designed to prove causality.

Noting that the present study focused on only certain markers of longevity, Dr. Kaiser added that researchers need to determine other such factors. For instance, he said that the SNPs used to calculate the GRS were more common among people of European ancestry.
