  • Researchers examined the link between hours spent watching TV and the risk of potentially fatal blood clots.
  • They found that prolonged TV watching is linked to a 35{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} higher risk of developing venous thromboembolism (VTE) than watching TV for shorter periods.
  • The researchers say that their findings do not prove causation and that more research is necessary before making any conclusions.

The hardening or narrowing of arteries — through atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD) — and potentially fatal blood clots in the veins called VTE are related and share common risk factors, including obesity and smoking.

Studies have shown that prolonged sedentary behavior, or physical inactivity, is linked to an increased risk of vascular conditions such as CVD and VTE.

Watching TV is a significant part of sedentary leisure time. Research indicates a link between TV watching time and CVD. However, studies on the link between TV watching time and VTE have varied — some support the association, while others negate it.

An analysis of different studies looking at the link between TV watching and VTE could help researchers and the public better understand the risk factors for the condition.

In a recent study, researchers from Finland, Ghana, and the United Kingdom conducted a meta-analysis of three studies examining the link between TV watching time and VTE.

They found that watching TV for longer was associated with a higher risk of developing VTE.

“General findings highlight the need for everybody to be physically active,“ Dr. Setor Kunutsor, lead author of the study, told Medical News Today. “If you want to binge on TV viewing, take breaks in-between. Stand and stretch every 30 mins.”

“For people whose jobs involve sitting for long hours, take regular breaks in-between; they will need to also increase their physical activity levels, as there is evidence showing that higher volumes of moderate and vigorous activity can reduce, or even eliminate, the risks associated with sedentary behavior.”

– Dr. Kunutsor

The study appears in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology.

Of 28 potential studies examining the relationship between watching TV and the risk of first VTE events, the researchers selected three published between 2016 and 2021.

Altogether, these studies included 131,421 participants from the United States and Japan. At the beginning of the studies, the participants were aged 54–65 years.

Average follow-up times ranged from 5.1 to 19.8 years. Across the studies, there were 964 VTE events.

All of the studies assessed for TV viewing times via self-reported questionnaires and also included information on established VTE risk factors, such as:

After analyzing the data, the researchers found that those who watched TV for more than 4 hours per day had a 35{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} higher risk of developing VTE than those who watched TV for less than 2.5 hours per day.

They also report that their results are independent of age, sex, BMI, and physical activity.

To explain their findings, the researchers write that as TV viewing involves immobilization, extended periods of this activity may increase VTE risk factors such as:

  • body weight, hypertension, and lipids
  • systemic inflammation
  • plasma viscosity and platelet aggregation
  • venous stasis, which occurs when prolonged sitting prevents blood from returning to the heart from the lower extremities

They also note that snacking on non-nutritious foods while watching TV may also have contributed to an increased VTE risk, although they did not assess diet in their study.

“There is probably a constellation of factors related to cardiometabolic factors and inflammation,“ Wendy J Brown, Ph.D., who is a professor at the School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences at the University of Queensland, Australia, and was not involved in the study, told MNT.

“But I guess that venous pooling, i.e., stasis, might be important — except that decreased venous return is more likely if people are sitting with feet on the ground and not lying down with feet up (but you can get venous pooling when standing still as well). Note too that a single episode of ‘prolonged’ sitting — such as we see in long haul flights — is also reported to be associated with VTE,” she added.

“The study by Kunutsor and colleagues suggests that the link between TV viewing and blood clots might be […] due to being immobilized, i.e., sitting for long periods of time,” said Dr. Aviroop Biswas, Ph.D., who is assistant professor in social and behavioral health sciences at the University of Toronto and was also not involved in this study.

“This might be possible as TV viewing habits might reflect most of a person’s daily sitting time, and sitting for long periods of time has been linked with inflamed blood vessels, reduced blood flow, and vascular dysfunction — all of which are linked to a higher risk of stroke. These links are likely to be stronger among people with low levels of physical activity (PA), as PA can reduce risks of inflammation and other stroke risk factors — though, the study did not examine this relationship.”

When MNT asked whether these findings might apply to being stationary in a more general sense, Dr. Kunutsor said: “[These results also apply] to people whose jobs involve being stationary for a long time — jobs that involve sitting for a long time. This is the reason why some employers encourage employees to stand and move about more regularly. The use of standing desks is very useful for such jobs. Even standing, which is the least active behavior, has been reported to be associated with health benefits compared with sitting.”

“I guess the issue of being sedentary for long periods is a hazard — there need not be a screen necessarily,” added Prof. Brown. “Some people sit for very long hours at work without interruption, [such as in factories], but we tend to think more about office and call center workers who sit in front of screens. Drivers of trains, buses, etc., also sit for long periods without interruption.”

“But I think prolonged and uninterrupted TV time might be a proxy for a different kind of lifestyle with many unmeasured confounders [such as diet]. In any case, it need not be TV. I think that, especially in COVID times, people may have been watching a lot of movies through channels other than TV,” she explained.

The authors conclude that prolonged TV watching might be linked to an increased risk of VTE.

The authors note that the study had limitations. Due to its observational nature, they say that their results do not prove cause and effect. Furthermore, as their analysis was only based on three studies, they recognize the need for further research in this area. They also say that the data on TV watching times may not be fully accurate, as they were self-reported.

“The study has a lot of limitations, and frankly, is not convincing evidence for a link between prolonged TV time and blood clots,” said Dr. Biswas. “All three studies also sampled older participants — age range 40+. As age is a risk factor for stroke, and participants were followed for 5 up to 20 years, it’s possible that there would have been a higher number of stroke cases than studies examining younger participants — and so the risks for blood clots might have been lower.”

“The three studies explored in the review did not consider important risk factors for stroke. For example, diet or blood sugar levels are not measured in the three studies. Diet, especially a diet that increases blood sugars, can negatively influence how our body breaks down blood sugars, which increases inflammation and risk of blood clots,” he explained.

“This is particularly important to examine, as one study is from Japan, and two are from the U.S. People from these countries have different diets, and we have no idea about how these differences contribute to their risks. There is also evidence of different risk of blood clots/stroke for men and women, though these were not factored into any of the studies or the review,“ he pointed out.

Prof. Brown agreed that there are limitations to the research. She said, “The most important concern [for me] is that although the three studies ‘adjusted for’ physical activity, this does not mean the effects are ‘independent’ of physical activity — so we don’t know if these effects were attenuated or eliminated in those who were highly active in leisure time.”

“And none of the studies considered what the participants were doing when they not engaged in ‘prolonged’ TV time. There are 24 hours in a day. If prolonged TV was 4 hours, then what the people were doing in the other 12 hours of ‘wake time’ is very important. Prolonged TV time may be a proxy for a generally sedentary lifestyle.”

– Prof. Brown

“I would guess that people who do at least 1 hour of at least moderate intensity physical activity each day might not be at increased risk of VTE! This was not adequately examined in the studies included here,” she concluded.

And there’s a late entry into the coaching search: New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, a former Raiders head mentor.

It’s properly-acknowledged in league circles that Polian is a powerful advocate for Caldwell, according to league sources not approved to talk publicly. It is much less crystal clear what chairman George Halas McCaskey or staff president Ted Phillips wants.

A single source characterized the problem this way: “All three have distinctive views when it arrives down to which mentor they like. It’s going to be very exciting to see whose voice is the loudest and most persuasive.”

One more resource opined that Quinn could in the end area extra than 1 offer, together with, probably, the Bears and Denver Broncos.

Supply: JuJu Smith-Schuster fascinated in Chiefs all over again

What is next for Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore?

As abruptly as the Dallas Cowboys’ time finished with a hurry-up offense botched by questionable participate in-contacting and the final-next execution of quarterback Dak Prescott on a far too-late spike, that rough ending has not dimmed the foreseeable future outlook for offensive coordinator Kellen Moore.

Moore has interviewed for head coaching work opportunities with the Denver Broncos, Minnesota Vikings, Miami Dolphins, and Jacksonville Jaguars. Nevertheless, Moore is not anticipated to land a new task in this hiring cycle, according to league sources not licensed to converse publicly.

Moore offered well in interviews. But at minimum one using the services of committee arrived away thinking if he has the commanding persona and leadership fashion to stand in front of an overall workforce and grab players’ focus. What this suggests for the Cowboys heading ahead is this: Moore will be back with the Cowboys in 2022.

That’s a great issue, particularly for a staff poised to get rid of defensive coordinator Quinn, who is fielding delivers from far more than just one franchise, which include the Broncos. There would be continuity on offense with Moore, Prescott, and functioning again Ezekiel Elliott main an attack that finished initially in factors and yards per match previous period.

Moore, 33, has a strong long run. 1 far more time could make him a much more eye-catching head coaching applicant — specifically coaching WR CeeDee Lamb and a pair of Pro Bowl offensive linemen.

“I consider Moore is 1 of the superior offensive coordinators that we have confronted,” New England Patriots mentor Invoice Belichick as soon as reported. “It’s not just the gamers. It’s the plan.”

Connections go way again for Broncos executive, Rams’ Kevin O’Connell

Extended ahead of Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell emerged as a prospect for Denver’s head coaching emptiness, he was seeking to keep off a challenger in a college or university QB level of competition.

O’Connell had to fight to acquire the commencing job at San Diego Point out versus a 6-foot-6, 230-pound quarterback named Darren Mougey. Both have been recruits of then-head coach Tom Craft.

O’Connell sooner or later gained the position and was later drafted by the New England Patriots in the third round. Mougey moved to huge receiver and later played for the Atlanta Falcons and Arizona Cardinals after heading undrafted.

Now, Mougey is Denver’s director of player staff, and O’Connell is a prospect for the Broncos’ HC vacancy developed when they fired mentor Vic Fangio. Mougey is a member of a look for committee led by general manager George Paton which is analyzing O’Connell together with Quinn and Environmentally friendly Bay Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.

The Broncos’ offense, especially at quarterback, is the main concern on a workforce or else capable of succeeding. O’Connell signifies a branch in the expanding Sean McVay tree. O’Connell doesn’t call the performs but manufactures the sport plans in tandem with McVay.

Apple cider vinegar shots: Benefits, risks, and recipe

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) shots are tiny drinks that contain a combination of ACV with another liquid. Some shots also consist of other substances, this sort of as spices or sweeteners.

Some exploration implies that ACV has wellbeing gains, these as advertising balanced cholesterol and blood glucose stages. Nevertheless, consuming concentrated ACV can erode tooth enamel and irritate the esophagus, or foods pipe.

To avoid facet outcomes, persons must restrict their consumption of ACV to 15 milliliters (ml) for each working day — equivalent to 1 tablespoon — and dilute it in a tall glass of h2o.

Retain reading to master far more about the added benefits and challenges of ACV pictures, as well as how to acquire them securely and make them at home.

ACV pictures are small beverages that comprise ACV, normally with a tiny total of yet another liquid, these kinds of as a fruit juice or drinking water.

It is attainable to make ACV photographs at house or invest in ready-produced kinds in retailers. Commercially out there ACV shots occasionally comprise other components, which may well contain:

ACV is apple juice that has been through fermentation 2 times. The very first fermentation will involve mixing apple juice with yeast and a carbohydrate. This alterations the carbs into alcoholic beverages. The 2nd fermentation turns the alcoholic beverages into acetic acid, which provides ACV its acidity.

Even though there is some investigation about the probable health and fitness gains of ACV in typical, there is no exploration on the rewards of using ACV as a shot. It is most likely that it is no more useful than consuming ACV in other methods, this kind of as in a glass of water or as an component in meals, such as salad dressings.

For folks who do not like the flavor of ACV, it may be easier to drink as a shot.

ACV, additional normally, may have some practical wellness gains. Study suggests it may:

Enhance cholesterol and glucose degrees

Substantial cholesterol and blood glucose are possibility components for many cardiovascular disorders. These ailments are a leading trigger of untimely loss of life.

A 2021 review evaluated 9 scientific tests on the outcomes of ACV and found that the vinegar may perhaps encourage much healthier blood lipid and glucose degrees. This may possibly aid people today decrease the hazard of cardiovascular problems in mixture with other interventions, these as a balanced diet program.

Nevertheless, the review notes that because of to some limitations, people today need to interpret these conclusions with caution and that more investigate is needed to validate the consequences. ACV is not a alternative for medical treatment method.

Increase immunity

Bacterial strains are more and more getting to be resistant to antibiotics, so experts are seeking for alternatives to improve immunity and combat bacterial bacterial infections. With this intent, exploration in 2018 examined preliminary animal and test-tube scientific studies on the antimicrobial effects of ACV.

It concluded that the vinegar has antimicrobial consequences in opposition to Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans, as well as lessening swelling through an infection. Far more investigate is required to recognize if ACV can support decrease these microbes in humans.

Advertise fat loss

A person more mature analyze implies that ACV could assist market weight reduction. The small scientific demo from 2009 compared the effects of consuming 15 and 30 ml of the vinegar for each working day with using a placebo.

Evaluation of the success indicated that daily consumption of ACV may perhaps lessen weight, human body mass index, stomach fat, and waistline circumference. Significantly more study is essential to verify that ACV impacts body body weight in a larger sized population.

A 2020 assessment assessed the aspect outcomes of ACV intake and concluded that it is probable harmless to get it in just recommended limitations. A 2021 paper states that the best ingestion is 15 ml per day (1 tbsp), which is the sum in numerous, but not all, shot recipes.

Nonetheless, consuming ACV as a shot carries many health and fitness dangers mainly because of the superior concentration of vinegar they comprise. Small amounts of ACV with satisfactory dilution is needed to keep away from the following:

Erosion of tooth enamel

Investigate in 2020 assessed the consequences of two times-every day use of 2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar mixed with 1 cup of drinking water. At the conclusion of the 8-7 days experiment, the scientists observed that the consume can erode tooth enamel.

Tooth enamel erosion is permanent and irreversible, so it is essential to keep away from procedures that could result in it where ever doable.

Hurt to esophagus

A 2019 scenario analyze documented a scenario of a teenager ingesting an undiluted fermented vinegar drink each individual working day for 1 thirty day period. This consume was strongly acidic, main to acid burns in the esophagus.

Although this is an isolated scenario, the authors of the analyze emphasize that undiluted vinegar beverages are corrosive. Ingesting them also frequently may possibly destruction the gastrointestinal tract.

Growth of osteoporosis

Some proof indicates that extreme ACV usage can add to weak or brittle bones.

For example, an older 1998 scenario examine claimed that a woman who drank 250 ml of ACV for every working day missing bone mineral density to the extent of developing osteoporosis.

When this is an serious situation, it is most effective for persons to drink no more ACV than medical practitioners advocate to prevent the risk of complications.

While members in the 2021 assessment consumed involving 15–770 ml of ACV per day, the researchers decided that 15 ml for every working day is the optimum dose. This is equal to 1 tbsp.

For small chance, persons ought to dilute 1 tbsp of ACV in a tall glass of water. Diluting in fruit juice is not as helpful due to the fact fruit juice is also acidic.

For supplemental security of the tooth, individuals can consume the ACV water by means of a straw. Rinse the mouth with plain drinking water afterward.

Beneath are two ACV shot recipes individuals may well desire to consider. To secure the enamel, it is highly recommended to comply with the instructions higher than for consuming ACV safely and securely.

Apple and ginger

Components:

  • 1 tbsp ACV
  • ¼ cup unsweetened fruit juice
  • a pinch of freshly grated ginger

Blend the substances with each other in a bowl or blender until eventually incorporated.

Honey and spices

Substances:

  • 4 tbsp warm drinking water
  • 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp ACV
  • pinch ground cinnamon or turmeric

Add the heat h2o and honey or maple syrup to a Mason jar and shake until it dissolves. Then increase the other ingredients and stir.

ACV photographs consist of vinegar blended with a different liquid, these as h2o or fruit juice. They are little in measurement and may possibly have other components, this sort of as spices or sweeteners.

Some exploration signifies that ACV has some well being advantages. It may possibly enable to cut down substantial cholesterol and control blood glucose levels. Nevertheless, there is no unique profit to getting ACV as a shot. Executing so may possibly hurt the teeth or throat because of to the acidity of the combination.

People today who want to consider ACV for its overall health added benefits can reduce the prospect of side results by mixing no additional than 1 tbsp of ACV in a tall glass of water. They may perhaps also wish to drink it via a straw.

He has long ties to Daboll, who will likely spend the next week preparing for the Cincinnati Bengals or beginning a new job. It’s hard to see how no one hires him this cycle.

A group of personnel at Raven Application, a studio owned by Activision Blizzard, stated Friday that they were forming a union and needed the well known video recreation company to voluntarily recognize it.

The new union, the Video game Employees Alliance, states it incorporates additional than 80 per cent of the 34 people in the top quality assurance division of Raven, the Wisconsin studio that helps build Activision’s popular Phone of Duty video game. More than 60 Raven personnel walked out in early December, protesting the company’s ending of the contracts of a dozen non permanent Raven high-quality assurance workers, which they reported felt abrupt and unfair. Some have been on strike given that then.

“This is just the greatest factor for us and our firm heading ahead, for us to have a voice,” explained Erin Corridor, a Raven high-quality assurance worker who aided organize the union. She mentioned she hoped that unionizing would guide to superior job stability, and that the Activity Employees Alliance would be just “the initial domino at Activision.”

“I assume a ton of us are inspired a ton by the fact that unionization in the video games marketplace hasn’t actually happened yet,” Ms. Hall stated.

Now, Activision executives will have to make your mind up whether to acknowledge the union voluntarily or pressure a vote amongst workers, which the Nationwide Labor Relations Board would oversee. Activision mentioned in a assertion that it was “carefully reviewing” the ask for.

“While we consider that a direct marriage between the corporation and its group users delivers the strongest get the job done force prospects, we deeply regard the rights of all workforce under the legislation to make their have decisions about whether or not to join a union,” the organization explained in the statement. Activision included that it had amplified shell out, time off and health care added benefits for the unionizing employees in latest decades.

Activision, which Microsoft on Tuesday said it would buy for approximately $70 billion, has been working with months of worker unrest. Right before the business incited anger by not retaining the Raven personnel in December, workers experienced been pushing for labor organizing and improved remedy due to the fact July, when a California employment agency sued Activision, accusing it of fostering a culture the place women have been routinely sexually harassed and discriminated against.

Jessica Gonzalez, a former Activision worker and a single of the organizers of ABetterABK, a group of activists that fashioned in the wake of the lawsuit to strengthen situations at Activision and its Blizzard and King models, stated she hoped the Raven union, even though little, would galvanize far more labor attempts at the enterprise — which has about 10,000 personnel — and at other gaming publishers.

“I consider it’ll have a ripple influence throughout the industry,” Ms. Gonzalez mentioned. “I’m hoping the relaxation of ABK will join our mission and help drive this movement ahead.”

In December, workers at the unbiased activity developer Vodeo Game titles, which has about a dozen staff, became the very first movie game studio union in North America.

“A collective bargaining agreement will give Raven QA personnel a voice at get the job done, strengthening the games they deliver and creating the corporation more powerful,” Sara Steffens, C.W.A.’s secretary-treasurer, stated in a assertion. “Voluntary recognition is the rational way forward.”

In a news release asserting the union, C.W.A. and the Sport Staff Alliance accused Activision of using “surveillance and intimidation techniques, which includes employing notorious union busters, to silence employees.”

Ms. Hall and C.W.A. equally mentioned the timing, provided Microsoft’s blockbuster acquisition of Activision, was coincidental. Microsoft declined to comment on the union organizing.

Some personnel check out Microsoft’s obtain of the company, which could choose a 12 months or more to near, as a route for Activision to enhance its workplace culture.

Other people see it as an simple out for the company’s embattled chief executive, Bobby Kotick, who has been under fireplace due to the fact past summertime and is expected to phase down as main executive when the offer is complete, two people with expertise of his programs have reported.

During a enterprise livestream on Thursday with Julie Hodges, Activision’s main people officer, Mr. Kotick informed personnel that he had promised Microsoft that he would “stay as lengthy as is vital to ensure that we have a good integration and a excellent transition,” according to a transcript of the conversation seen by The New York Times.

Mr. Kotick also resolved Activision’s culture difficulties, saying the Microsoft deal “reinforces” his determination to reforming the office, “and we have certainly identified that we have chances for improvement.”

He extra that Microsoft “has been on its very own journey to strengthen its place of work, and I feel that it’s a shared journey.”
