College football schedule today: TV channels, start times for every Week 9 top 25 game

A couple weekends of relatively lowkey football have led to an excellent Week 9 slate, including two massive meetings between Big Ten East teams.

The biggest game of the week is the rivalry matchup between No. 6 Michigan and No. 8 Michigan State in East Lansing. Both teams are 7-0, making this meeting the first time in series history that these teams meet as undefeateds. Just another layer to what is already a massive game heavy with Big Ten championship and College Football Playoff implications.

Saturday’s meeting will be the biggest tests for each team thus far in 2021. The biggest players from Saturday’s game will be Spartans running back Kenneth Gainwell III, who ranks second nationally with 997 rushing yards on top of nine rushing touchdowns. Wolverines quarterback Cade McNamara (92 of 146 passing, 1,115 yards, five touchdowns to one interception) will also need a good showing.

Both defenses rank in the top 20 in points allowed: Michigan ranks second with 14.3 points per game, while Michigan State is 19th with 18.7. They’ll make it hard on the opposing offenses, so it’s imperative neither becomes one-dimensional.

Elsewhere, No. 20 Penn State will travel to No. 5 Ohio State looking to avoid a third straight loss. The Nittany Lions struggled greatly on offense in their last two games, even with quarterback Sean Clifford throwing the ball. Conversely, Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud has overcome a relatively slow start, throwing for 14 touchdowns and zero interceptions in his last three games. The one thing Penn State has going for it — apart from a fairly stout defense — is a nothing-to-lose mentality, considering they’re out of championship contention.

The SEC has a couple of big offerings as well, mainly in the meeting between No. 10 Ole Miss and No. 18 Auburn. Matt Corral will look to keep his standing near the top of the Heisman Trophy odds in place against an Auburn team that has rebounded for some big wins in recent weeks. And you can’t forget the neutral-site rivalry matchup between No. 1 Georgia and Florida in Jacksonville, Fla.

Week 7 represents a relative lull in the action among top-25 college football teams.

Indeed, eight teams represented in the AP Top 25 for Week 7 have taken byes, with only two games taking place between ranked opponents: No. 11 Kentucky at No. 1 Georgia and No. 12 Oklahoma State at No. 25 Texas.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t interesting games to watch: Seven top-25 teams (No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Iowa, No. 3 Cincinnati, No. 4 Oklahoma, No. 10 Michigan State, No. 11 Kentucky and No. 12 Oklahoma State) will look to keep their undefeated records intact.

Elsewhere, can No. 5 Alabama avoid its second consecutive loss for the first time since 2007 following the Crimson Tide’s loss to Texas A&M? And can No. 9 Oregon get back on track against Cal following the bye, retaining its College Football Playoff hopes in the process? The meetings between Auburn and No. 17 Arkansas, No. 15 BYU and Baylor and No. 20 Florida at LSU also have intrigue as well, not to mention the “Manning Bowl” between No. 13 Ole Miss and Tennessee.

What channel is Notre Dame vs. Cincinnati on today? Time, TV schedule for Week 5 college football game

The Bearcats are traveling to South Bend, Indiana to face the only ranked opponent on their schedule this season. 

The Fighting Irish will host Cincinnati on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. ET in what will likely be one of their most competitive matchups this season. The Bearcats will attempt to put an end to the Notre Dame 26-game win streak at home. 

After suffering a leg injury during Notre Dame’s 41-13 win, Jack Coan is slated to start for Notre Dame. Coach Brian Kelly confirmed that he likely suffered a soft tissue injury in the third quarter of the matchup. He took a massive hit and was sacked five times before he left the field for the locker room. 

Coan completed 77 of 127 passes for 986 yards with nine touchdowns and two interceptions through his first four games at Notre Dame. As he is continuing to build his momentum with the Fighting Irish, Coan is facing some issues with the offensive line. During Notre Dame’s 39-32 win against Toledo, starting left tackle Michael Carmody left the field with a sprained ankle. Suffering his absence for two games, the Fighting Irish offensive line has allowed the second-most total of 21 sacks in the FBS.

While Jack Coan and his offense appear solid, they will be tested by the Cincinnati defense, which is ranked 27th overall. The Bearcats’ defense allowed 298.7 yards per game and six touchdowns through their first three matchups. Linebacker Darrian Beavers leads the defense in sacks with 1.5 and totals 21 total tackles, followed by cornerback Arquon Busch who totals one sack and 10 tackles. 

Quarterback Desmond Ridder is also expected to make strides for the Bearcats. He completed 54 of 83 passes for 748 yards and totaled seven touchdowns with two interceptions through three games. Ridder will likely continue to utilize wide receiver Tyler Scott and Michael Young Jr., who combine for 282 total receiving yards. Young will have the opportunity to reunite with his former teammates for the first time since he graduated from Notre Dame in 2020 and entered the transfer portal.

College football picks, schedule: Predictions against the spread, odds for top 25 games today in Week 5

Though this is only the fifth week of the 2021 college football season, plenty will be decided Saturday with multiple top-25 matchups on the slate and plenty of other ranked teams in action against tough opponents. Four straight weeks of unpredictable finishes and upsets have set the stage for what should be a wild remaining two thirds of the season.

There are four games between ranked opponents Saturday with with No. 8 Arkansas visiting No. 2 Georgia, No. 7 Cincinnati taking on No. 9 Notre Dame as a road favorite, Lane Kiffin’s No. 12 Ole Miss facing former boss Nick Saban’s No. 1 Alabama in the SEC on CBS Game of the Week, and undefeated Big 12 programs meeting when No. 21 Baylor travels to No. 19 Oklahoma State. In total, 23 ranked teams will be in action Saturday with the other two — No. 5 Iowa and No. 13 BYU — facing frequent opponents Friday night.

The Badgers offense has played too poorly, and this Michigan defense has been just as strong — if not better — as the Penn State and Notre Dame defenses that have suffocated it already this season. In the end, Crimson Tide QB Bryce Young will make a couple of plays late to win an instant classic in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Their points off turnovers margin of +41 ranked in a tie for 10th nationally with Ohio State, but keep in mind the Hoosiers played in only eight games. This season, Indiana ranks 95th nationally with a points off turnovers margin of -7. If Indiana can take care of the football, it can hang with the Nittany Lions. Unfortunately, nothing I’ve seen from the Hoosiers has me confident they’ll be able to do that. Indiana keeps it close into the early third quarter, but Penn State puts the game away after that. Prediction: Indiana (-10.5) — Tom Fornelli

9 p.m. | ESPN, fuboTV (Try for free) — I’ll take LSU to win and cover due in large part to Auburn’s recent defensive struggles. The Tigers from The Plains are giving up 6.5 yards per play, and the secondary will have a tough time stopping LSU QB Max Johnson and star wide receiver Kayshon Boutte. Don’t get me wrong, this won’t be a blowout — far from it — but Johnson will make a play or two late to get out of there with a win. Prediction: LSU (-3.5) — Barrett Sallee

The stakes have never been higher in the 2021 college football season than in Week 5, which features four games between undefeated, ranked opponents on Saturday.

The biggest game, rankings wise, is the top-10 SEC showdown between No. 2 Georgia and visiting, No. 8 Arkansas. The Bulldogs can make a compelling argument as the best team in the country, but Sam Pittman is leading a renaissance at Arkansas no one expected this early into his tenure. Both have impressive top-10 wins this season (the Bulldogs over No. 3 Clemson and Razorbacks over No. 7 Texas A&M), and the winner will have another after this cross-division meeting.

Another top-10 matchup to watch: No. 7 Cincinnati at No. 9 Notre Dame. With the Fighting Irish’s dominant win over No. 18 Wisconsin — the team’s best win of the season thus far — Brian Kelly became Notre Dame’s winningest coach of all time. Will the team have a hangover against the Bearcats? Luke Fickell’s squad is still looking for respect as a potential Group of 5 buster. A win over one of college football’s premier blue bloods — one that has made the College Football Playoff twice — should look very good on Cincy’s Playoff resume.

Another intriguing matchup: No. 12 Ole Miss at top-ranked Alabama in Tuscaloosa, a year after the Crimson Tide outlasted the Rebels 63-48 in a sloppy, defense-optional shootout in Oxford. Alabama has looked human through four games this season, struggling mightily in a road victory over No. 11 Florida. Lane Kiffin’s offense, meanwhile, leads the nation in yards per game (635.3) and points per game (52.7). This battle could also be an early battle for Heisman Trophy supremacy between Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral (68.8 completion percentage, 997 yards, nine touchdowns) and Alabama signal-caller Bryce Young (72.1 completion percentage, 1,214 yards, 15 touchdowns). Did we mention the nation’s top recruit, Arch Manning, will be in attendance?

Undefeated Big 12 teams in No. 21 Baylor and No. 19 Oklahoma State round out the top-25 action, facing off in Stillwater at 7 p.m. But don’t look over the Friday night matchup between No. 5 Iowa and undefeated Maryland, led by quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa.
