All eyes are on inflation data next week

Looking ahead to next week, investors are already readying for the latest consumer price index reading to see if inflation once again cooled.

The January reading for the index, which follows the prices of a wide basket of goods as a gauge of inflation, is due Tuesday. Economists polled by Dow Jones forecast a 0.4{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} increase in headline CPI on a monthly basis and a 6.2{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} gain from the prior year.

“Next week is really all about one thing, and that one thing is CPI,” said Scott Ladner, chief investment officer at Horizon Investments.

Market observers also expect the CPI reading to help dictate the Federal Reserve’s next move on interest rates. The central bank last implement a 25 basis point interest rate hike, while Fed Chair Jerome Powell noted inflation was starting to come down but had a ways to go.

Emmanuel Cau, an analyst at Barclays, said inflation data will likely be a market catalyst going forward.

“More than the central banks’ rhetoric, we think it is the inflation data that will dictate the direction of travel for markets from here,” he said in a note to clients Friday.

Stifel upgrades VF Corp. to buy

Stifel upgraded VF Corp. shares to buy from hold, saying the stock looks compelling after investors sold it in the wake of a dividend cut. The company behind Vans and The North Face has grown its dividend for 49 years, which means it’s often held by exchange traded funds as a dividend aristocrat.

“The dividend cut and resulting dislocation in shares present an attractive entry point and we recommend capitalizing on elevated volume to build positions. We view the new look 4.6{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} dividend yield as safe (mid-50{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} payout) and foresee a flush of cash flow (forward 5 quarter projection $2-2.5bn, >20{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} yield to the equity) accruing to the equity value,” analyst Jim Duffy wrote.

Analysts bail on Lyft after latest earnings

Wall Street analysts say Lyft has no excuses for its poor guidance.

Lyft shares fell more than 30{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} Friday as traders weighed a weaker-than-expected forecast from the ridesharing company in its most recent earnings report. The firm otherwise reported a revenue beat.

The ridesharing company said it expects to make about $975 million in revenue in the fiscal first quarter of 2023, or lower than the $1.09 billion consensus estimate from analysts, according to StreetAccount. Lyft also forecasted an adjusted EBITDA between $5 million and $15 million in the first quarter.

Given this, market observers pointed out that Uber might be better positioned to take advantage of a broader recovery in ridesharing, as Lyft appears to be falling behind.

“The mea culpa by management seems to be that the business was over-earning on inflated prices amidst supply-constraints (surge pricing), an issue they had downplayed to then apparently be taken by surprise,” wrote Loop Capital’s Rob Sanderson, one of several analysts who downgraded the stock.

Wall Street could be entering a new bull market, technical strategist says

Many Wall Street strategists have been skeptical of the rally to start 2023, but some technical indicators suggest it might have serious staying power.

“Despite what might seem a logical expectation of lower prices, the market action has been quite impressive to the upside,” Frank Gretz, technical analyst at Wellington Shields, said in a note to clients.

Gretz pointed out that the majority of NYSE stocks are trading above their 200-day moving average, and that new 12-month highs are lapping new 12-month new lows on both the NYSE and the Nasdaq.

“We just don’t see these numbers fitting in with the ongoing bear market thesis. Without meaning to be too convoluted semantically, a big new leg down here would almost seem a new bear market, rather than a continuation of the old one,” the note said.

Koning also said the stock could see a relief rally in the coming months as Fleetcor’s Russia exposure, along with other macro pressures, start to wane.

Consumer spending strengthened in January, Bank of America says

Credit and debit card data from January suggests the U.S. consumer is not about to roll over, according to a note from David Tinsley, senior economist at Bank of America Institute.

“We have seen signs of a strengthening in consumer spending at the start of this year – Bank of America credit and debit card spending per household rose 5.1{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} year-over-year (YoY) in January, compared to 2.2{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} YoY in December. Total payments across all channels (Automated Clearing House (ACH), Bill Pay, Credit and Debit Card, Wires, Person-to-Person, Cash and Check) grew 7.5{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} YoY,” the note said.

Those year-over-year improvements could be due in part to a Covid wave that hit parts of the country in January 2021, but the larger picture still points to a resilient consumer, according to Tinsley.

“More broadly, the data suggests that while lower income consumers are pressured, they still have solid cash buffers and borrowing capacity. Even for the lowest income cohorts this should provide support for some time yet,” the note said.

Affirm shares fell more than 3{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} after Morgan Stanley downgraded the buy now pay later company to equal weight from overweigh.

“BNPL [Buy Now, Pay Later] can be a great way to give younger consumers and those with limited credit history access to purchasing credit, and Affirm’s BNPL’s structure helps establish behavior and repayment discipline,” the bank said.

However, by limiting its offering to BNPL and developing products that have substantially different features (e.g. Debit+) than what has been broadly adopted by the market (i.e. revolving credit), the challenges to customer education and adoption rise,” Morgan Stanley said.

NYFW Rising Stars Raul Lopez and Willy Chavarria on Expanding the Definition of American Fashion

RL:  We occur from comparable backgrounds—my family members was also incredibly political, [especially about] about how men and women perceived people or how we carried ourselves. I often say that my collections are a reflection of myself and my stories. I constantly want to be respectful, but I check out to do a little something that will shake points up.

WC: Often it will get to be a lot with the “story.” In particular when white persons question about it, I’m constantly like, what about the garments? I don’t know if you get that, Raul.

RL: Yeah, all the time. I’m always like let us emphasis on the outfits, and allow the clothing convey to the story. Willy, you arrive from a company track record. I come from an era where by that was what was expected and what was correct, so I want to shake it up. The identify “Luar” [Raul spelled backwards] was a way of fooling men and women, building them assume it was a thing French, but then I wander in and they gag. I did not make it “Raul Lopez” for a motive, it is like an change moi.

That goes again to this idea of assimilation, and what you did is subvert that thought. Our community is usually represented in the media, specifically in style, by whiteness and wealth. Have you ever felt othered in these manner areas? And how does it really feel to now have the attention of those identical men and women?

WC: Unquestionably othered.

RL: Effectively, yeah [laughs]. I constantly felt variety of like an outsider. Even when I was accomplishing HBA [Hood By Air] and then started out doing my individual factor, it took a truly lengthy time for me to get in this article. I am a person who gets alongside with any person, I’m awesome, I like to communicate to folks, and it took a long time for me to get out of my head and recognize that… you are not for anyone, and as a lot as I want to be neat with every person, not every person is likely to want to be my close friend. Heading into all of these white areas, I generally felt like the kid seeking to get in, even however I was ideal there. But what benefited me is the way I dressed. I usually dressed myself up, so individuals would be like he appears awesome, he looks neat. If I didn’t belong, at least I glance like I can match in. It has been my coping mechanism ever because I was in school, for currently being in these areas that I wasn’t permitted in.

WC: It is funny that you say that, since, as queer men and women, we do this a ton. You have to be the fiercest detail in the space, and then everything’s ok.

RL: Precisely.

WC: I hear that, way too. Even when you’re on the within, you are nevertheless a minimal bit on the outside mainly because you really don’t get invited to every little thing, or you’re the only brown person someplace. It’s usually obvious. Thank god there are persons like us that are not just executing manner for brown individuals and individuals of color, but moving points forward. We give to our local community, and the local community feeds off it and receives larger, more powerful, and then feeds us back again.

Can 1-3 eggs per week help protect the heart?

Boiled eggs in a pot filled with waterShare on Pinterest
A examine found a url among consuming one to a few eggs for every week and a noticeably lower chance of creating cardiovascular condition. Natalia Mishina/Stocksy
  • A new Greek analyze asserts that eating one to three eggs a week can decrease the threat of cardiovascular illness by extra than 50 {cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809}.
  • The research described the 10-year cardiovascular results of self-claimed egg use.
  • The healthfulness of eggs is a controversial subject.
  • 1 expert explained to Clinical News These days that there are major challenges with the self-described details on which the new examine is primarily based.

A modern study released in Nutrition explored how egg consumption impacts one’s heart well being, and the paper’s authors noted a putting acquiring.

The analyze indicates consuming a person to a few eggs a 7 days is involved with a 60{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} lower possibility of establishing cardiovascular ailment.

In actuality, the research identified an even decreased hazard of creating cardiovascular disorder, 75{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809}, for all those feeding on four to 7 eggs a 7 days. Nevertheless, they only found a protective job in taking in a person to three eggs a 7 days soon after taking into consideration sociodemographic, lifestyle, and medical things. The authors concluded that egg consumption may have a protective job towards cardiovascular disorder when bundled in balanced diet program with very low usage of saturated fatty acids.

There is a good deal of exploration investigating the healthfulness of eggs, especially with regard to coronary heart wellness. Having said that, the conclusions have been contradictory. Numerous scientific tests, which includes 2019 analysis, observed that consuming eggs basically will increase cardiovascular danger. And a previous assessment examine sought to summarize and clarify the science, its title inquiring tongue-in-cheek, “Are eggs fantastic yet again?”

Eggs produce significant good quality vitamins, this sort of as proteins, minerals, unwanted fat-soluble nutritional vitamins, iron, and carotenoids. At the exact same time, they also have large stages of saturated fatty acids and important amounts of cholesterol, which are regarded lousy for the heart.

As a outcome, it is tough to determine irrespective of whether eggs are fantastic for your heart or negative.

The new review surveyed healthy men and gals residing in Greece’s greater metropolitan Athens area with regards to their egg-usage behavior. For the 1,514 adult men in the analyze, the mean age was 46, in addition or minus 13 several years. For 1,528 women of all ages, it was 45, additionally or minus 14 several years.

The study started in 2001 with 3042 contributors. The ultimate 2011-2012 adhere to-up wellbeing assessments incorporated 2020 of these people today.

Researchers requested contributors to self-report their month to month consumption of eggs, either alone or as recipe substances. They then divided these figures into weekly usage concentrations.

A single of the authors of the evaluation examine mentioned previously mentioned is Dr. Angela Zivkovic, affiliate professor and chief of the Zivkovic Lab at the University of California, Davis. Dr. Zivkovic was not associated in the latest review.

Dr. Zivkovic pointed out to Clinical News Right now that the self-reported mother nature of the new study’s facts calls its findings into query:

“Ask you how well you remember what you ate for breakfast two times back, considerably less six months ago, except you materialize to be an individual who eats the correct exact detail for breakfast just about every day.”

In addition, “Depending on how properly individuals actually don’t forget what they ate and/or come to feel like they ought to report because of what they believe they’re ‘supposed to’ try to eat,” included Dr. Zivkovic, “you may perhaps be reporting a lot more on the psychology and memory than the precise food ingestion.”

Dr. Zivkovic also cited the absence of nutritional context provided in the examine, indicating, “The truly essential question is ‘what had been the individuals who claimed having one to 3 eggs for every day not having?’”

The new study doesn’t capture the foods eggs changed, these types of as crimson meats, bread, or even greens. Primarily based on participants’ saturated fat amounts, Dr. Zivkovic suspected they were likely consuming much less pink meat or other saturated body fat-rich meats.

Michelle Routhenstein, cardiology dietitian and preventive cardiology nutritionist at EntirelyNourished, agreed that the satiating nature of eggs “may assist men and women consume additional deliberately, and not eat other processed or refined food items that can guide to an boost in cardiovascular hazard.” Routhenstein was not associated in the examine.

With out such context, it is tough, Dr. Zivkovic mentioned, to know what the researchers were being seriously observing. “That context is anything.” She explained a observe-up analyze to this exploration as an case in point of context’s worth:

“If I made the review such that men and women were being fed a few eggs for dinner in the intervention team and the handle team ate pork sausages as a substitute, you would probably come across the group consuming eggs had decreased risk. But if the control team ate a salad loaded with carotenoid-rich veggies with egg white as the protein supply, you may well locate the salad group as the one with the lessened threat.”

According to Dr. Zivkovic, overall health is not dependent on single foodstuff but on one’s whole diet.

“Can eggs be a portion of a balanced diet plan that is constant with the avoidance of heart ailment? Definitely. [Are they] the proper alternative for everybody? No.”

It is legitimate, Routhenstein defined, “Eggs are… a prosperous resource of Vitamin B2, B12, and selenium, which are cardioprotective.” The Vitamin B2 and B12 they consist of, she included, can enable normalize homocysteine degrees that, when elevated, might end result in arterial plaques. Routhenstein also credited eggs’ selenium for supporting to overcome the oxidative anxiety that is a main part of heart illness.

Additional good news, claimed Dr. Zivkovic, is that interventional research come across that “eggs do not increase whole cholesterol, and can, in fact, make improvements to the cholesterol efflux capacity of HDL [cholesterol] particles.”

“But the superior cholesterol and choline written content of eggs may be a dilemma for specific persons who are at possibility for heart disease.” explained Routhenstein. “So, although eggs may be ready to be integrated in a heart healthy diet program, the amount should be relatively restricted. The full diet plan must be evaluated for optimum threat reduction.”

  • Customers start by searching for a vehicle by price and zip code, then select a model from inventory and choose a monthly term that can easily be renewed
  • The price is clearly displayed and there is no need for negotiation
  • Next, they login to their account or create a new account
  • The customer follows in-app instructions to qualify
  • The customer then pays for the subscription using a credit card
  • The payment via credit card reserves the vehicle
  • A pickup time at the dealership is chosen
