Selling your car online can be a great way to get top dollar for your vehicle. It also helps you avoid the hassle of negotiating with dealerships. When selling your car online, being aware of common scams is essential. Be sure to meet buyers in a safe place and always verify their identity before moving forward with the sale.
It’s Easy
The internet has made every purchase easier, and selling your car is no exception. Online marketplaces and classified websites can help you quickly sell your vehicle for cash.
These companies vet sellers and buyers to ensure they’re trustworthy, allowing you to avoid people who might not follow through on a sale. You can also choose to sell your car through a private party sale, enabling you to set your own price and screen potential buyers in person before they visit your home. When you sell car online, it is best to include lots of pictures and thoroughly describe any work you’ve done on the car, according to experts. It’s important to leave a little wiggle room in your asking price, but not so much that you scare off buyers. You should also be prepared to answer questions about why you’re selling the vehicle and any problems it might have had.
You Can Reach a Larger Audience
Online car sales allow you to reach a larger audience than you could ever reach with classified ads in the local paper. This is especially true if you use a website to post listings in private groups dedicated to specific car makes and models. You should also remember to take multiple photos of your vehicle inside and out. And be sure to capture them in a spot with even lighting and no distracting background elements, like poles or signs. The better the pictures, the more likely you will get a solid offer for your car. You can then negotiate with the buyer to finalize a sale.
You Can Get Top Dollar
Many online car-buying companies can give you top dollar for your vehicle. However, how much you can get for your car depends on how, when, and where you sell it. For example, if you want to sell your car quickly for maximum value, consider using an online dealer-like platform. But these platforms often charge a service fee that can eat into your profits. You can also try selling your car through a private buyer using social media platforms. But dealing with unreliable buyers or negotiating prices can take time and effort. But be careful of scams—a buyer might make a bid and then back out at the last minute. You can ask for a deposit before handing over the keys or accepting cash to avoid this.
You Can Avoid Tire-Kickers
Selling your car online can be a great way to avoid the hassle of dealing with pushy salespeople and getting top dollar for your vehicle. However, weighing the pros and cons of selling your car online is important before deciding. Tire kickers are a sales exec’s worst nightmare. They waste time and energy by asking questions and raising objections but never move a deal forward. One of the best ways to avoid tire-kickers is by qualifying prospects based on their buyer intent. For example, ask them about their budget or if they’re ready to purchase.
Minnesota’s new-automobile emissions criteria that observe California regulations had been upheld by the state’s courtroom of appeals past week after the Minnesota Automobile Sellers Association filed a lawsuit previous year more than its problems.
The Cleanse Automobile Rule sets state car emission criteria in line with California Air Sources Board procedures, demanding a better percentage of motor vehicles supplied by makers to be electric powered autos and hybrids and all new cars marketed by sellers to meet up with the coastal state’s emission specifications. The regulations just take effect with the 2025 product calendar year. They ended up adopted in 2021 by Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and the Minnesota Pollution Control Company to aid meet the state’s environmental targets.
In its criticism versus the pollution control company, the dealers association argued that the Clean up Car or truck Rule unconstitutionally delegates rule-earning authority to California and that the Minnesota agency did not have the electrical power to make statewide rules. It also argued that Minnesota could not get on California’s criteria beneath federal regulations.
The Minnesota Court of Appeals rejected the dealers association’s arguments, asserting that the pollution management agency was acting inside its electricity, as outlined by the point out legislature, and that the company did not improperly delegate authority. It also identified Minnesota is eligible to adopt California principles.
“From the commence we have mentioned that the California car principles are not a great in good shape for Minnesota,” the affiliation stated in a statement following the Jan. 30 Minnesota Court docket of Appeals conclusion. “The state really should be instituting an aggressive plan of developing infrastructure and making incentives for consumers to obtain this new know-how.”
The sellers affiliation, which has mentioned it thinks the adjustments will lead to a provide of EVs that exceeds client demand from customers, explained Tuesday it is considering an enchantment.
The affiliation filed the court docket of appeals situation in June. It adopted a further lawsuit the affiliation submitted in federal courtroom in 2021, which also unsuccessful to block the laws.
The point out Air pollution Management Company on Jan. 30, in a assertion, explained it was “happy with today’s court docket decision upholding Minnesota’s thoroughly clean cars standard, which presents drivers with much more solutions to obtain electrical and hybrid motor vehicles that assist them conserve money on gas and handle weather alter.”
You know inflation is bad when your monthly car payment hits a thousand bucks.
For an increasing number of drivers, that’s the reality. A record number of Americans are paying at least $1,000 a month for their vehicles, according to new findings from the auto inventory site Edmunds.
Nearly 16{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} of car buyers who financed a new vehicle in the fourth quarter of 2022 have monthly payments reaching four figures. That share of car buyers more than doubled in two years.
Even used car buyers aren’t totally safe. More than 5{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} of buyers who financed a used vehicle in late 2022 are paying at least $1,000 a month, according to Edmunds. That number more than tripled in two years.
Analysts fear that some of these high-dollar borrowers are getting in over their heads. They say people who buy cars today are at risk of going underwater on their car loans down the road as used car values decline.
So we’re here to discuss two things:
How to lower your car payment, and
How to trade in a car that has negative equity.
We’ve got four tips for each.
4 Ways to Lower Your Car Payment
It looks like this is the future for more and more of us, since cars and car loans are more expensive than ever. The average sticker price of a new automobile has shot up to nearly $46,000.
Interest rates on car loans have risen to an average of 6.5{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} on new vehicles and 10{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} on used vehicles, compared with 4{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} and 7.4{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} two years ago, according to Edmunds.
Here are some ways to get a lower car payment:
1. Save Up for a Larger Down Payment
Just like with a mortgage, the more money you put down at the beginning, the lower your payments will be over the life of your auto loan.
For example, if you put a $5,000 down payment on a $25,000 car with 7{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} sales tax and a 4.5{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} APR, with a five-year loan, you would end up with a monthly car payment of a little over $400.
With no down payment and those same terms, you’d have a monthly payment of nearly $500.
2. Get Preapproved for a Loan
Get a loan preapproval. Shopping around for a preapproved auto loan for your new loan potentially helps you snag a lower interest rate than the one a dealership would offer.
By talking to lenders before you start shopping, you’ll not only know how much car you can afford, but you’ll have negotiating power for the loan’s interest rate as well as the length of the loan.
If you’ve ever heard someone refer to a car as a depreciating asset, it’s true. The longer you have a car, the less it’s worth. The first year of owning a new vehicle is when depreciation really packs a punch.

When you buy a used car, the original owner has already taken that initial hit on depreciation and the price you pay accounts for that.
Just because you’re buying a used car doesn’t mean you’ll be stuck with a clunker that was manufactured decades ago. Cars that are just a few years old often hit dealership lots when their previous owners reach the end of their lease.
PRO TIP: It is possible to get a car loan with bad credit. Here’s how.
Refinancing can make sense if you’re looking to lower your car payment over a longer term.
While you’re at it, you might be able to get a lower interest rate as well. Interest rates have likely risen since you bought your car, though. On the flip side, your credit score might have gone up, too.
Checking on your refinancing options may be worthwhile. Keep in mind, though, that a longer term means more interest paid over the life of the auto loan.
That leads us to our next subject…
4 Tips for Trading in a Car With Negative Equity
Edmunds analysts worry that in the near future, more people are going to be trading in cars that they still owe money on.
When figuring out how much you owe on the loan, use the loan payoff amount and not the principal, as the payoff amount may include things like fees and taxes you still owe on.
2. Hang Onto Your Car
This is really the best option, financially speaking. Yes, it isn’t always an option — especially if your current car needs expensive repairs — but you should at least weigh the cost of repairs vs. the long-term financial benefits of holding onto your old wheels.
3. Sell the Car Yourself
Here’s the hardest way to get yourself out of your underwater car loan, but it could also be among the most lucrative: Sell the car yourself. The payoff for the extra effort could be worth your time as opposed to trading your car in at the dealership.
4. Roll Over the Amount You Owe Into a New Auto Loan
This is the worst option, but sometimes you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do. You’ll end up with a bigger loan and a higher interest rate.
If this is your only option, you might consider downsizing to a cheaper car if possible. That way, you could be looking at a smaller payment even after adding the underwater debt amount into the new loan. Be warned that car prices have been going up, though.
None of these options will necessarily prevent you from starting out underwater on your next car loan, but they can help reduce the time you’ll spend climbing out of the hole.
Remember, unless you’re wealthy, a $1,000-a-month car payment is something to avoid if possible.
If you are teetering on the brink of buying an electric vehicle (EV), you may well be asking yourself if you should buy a new EV now or wait. We understand your hesitation. The faltering economy, exploding interest rates, new and confusing regulations on EV tax credits, and the high price of vehicles in general are only a few of the issues that may give you pause.
Our discussion here focuses on fully electric vehicles drawing all their power from a battery charged by plugging into an outside electric source. This excludes plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and traditional hybrids (HEVs), which both have and rely on gasoline-fueled engines.
Let’s explore some of the issues we’ve raised, provide a few pros and cons for buying now, and then we’ll tell you what we would do if we were in your shoes.
A few EV manufacturers (Nissan, Chevrolet, and Tesla) have reduced their EV prices. For example, Tesla has dropped the price of its Model 3 by $3,750, and its Model Y by $13,000. Consequently, under the new electric car tax credit rules, they are both now eligible for as much as a $7,500 credit. In other words, overnight the Model Y now can cost as much as $20,500 less than it did in December, 2022.

However, generally, we don’t see EV prices dropping significantly over the next few months
If you are adept at deciphering all the rules in the Inflation Reduction Act (or “Build Back Better” plan) that congress passed late last summer, you might successfully negotiate the mishmash of new rules. Then there are the exceptions and timetables for the latest EV tax-credit regulations, and as of this writing, the finalized details are still being hammered out. The ramifications of this new bill are too vast to explain here. We have covered many of the details, as we understand them today, elsewhere and you can check them out in our latest version of our article on tax credits.
However, whether you qualify for up to the $7,500 tax credit (2023) or tax rebate (2024) depends upon your income. For example, the rebates are limited to individuals reporting adjusted gross incomes of $150,000 or less on taxes, $225,000 for those filing as head of household, and $300,000 for joint filers. It also depends on the price of the EV ($55,000 or less for cars and $80,000 or less for trucks and SUVs). Oh, and to qualify, the EV must also be assembled in the United States, Canada, or Mexico. Unless you lease.
According to the financial market experts at Bankrate, the fed funds rate in early January of 2023 was 4.5{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809}. A year before, it was 0.25{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809}. Yep, that’s an increase of 4.25{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} year over year. Consequently, the prime rate jumped from 3.25{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} a year ago to 7.5{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} in early January. This pressures all lenders to increase interest rates for all other car loan borrowers across the board.
Cox Automotive Economist Jonathan Smoke sees the Fed raising the Federal Fund Rates even further in the first half of 2023. Cox is the parent company of Kelley Blue Book.
Consequently, auto loan rates will increase further, as well. At that point, the upward trend could be over and maybe even bring a little relief. However, Smoke expects auto loan interest rates to continue to be painfully high through 2023, and into 2024.
Is the Economy in a Recession?
Historically, two consecutive quarters of negative gross domestic product (GDP) have been the definition of a recession. The United States economy certainly met that standard in the first two quarters of 2022. However, it bounced back a bit in the last two quarters of 2022. The arbiter for making the “recession” call, the National Bureau of Economic Research, has yet to do so. Why? Because other economic indicators have remained relatively strong. For example, by government measures, unemployment has remained low, while consumer spending has remained high.
Sadly, there are cracks in some of the other economic indicators. For example, many high-profile employers have announced layoffs. Microsoft (10,000 worldwide), Amazon (18,000 worldwide), Goldman Sachs (3,200), Meta (more than 11,000), and so forth.
Many experts still anticipate the U.S. sliding into a recession in 2023. While the economy is weakening, it’s too soon to say how bad. or for how long, things will get.
Smoke summed up the current economy this way: “The economy’s fundamental issues are 40-year highs in inflation and, as a result, 20-plus year highs in interest rates as the Fed tries to slow the economy to bring inflation down to their 2{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} target.”
We’ve tried to avoid wading too far into the weeds; however, itemizing the pros and cons of buying an EV now should clarify things a bit more. Remember, these pros and cons aren’t based on whether you should buy an electric car at all. These are based on buying an electric vehicle now rather than waiting a year or more.
Pros
Interest rates – If interest rates significantly drop, it won’t be until much later in the year. In the meantime, they could potentially increase. Unless you are willing to wait another several months or a year, more than likely today’s interest rates are the best we’ll see probably until sometime in 2024.
Suggested retail prices – Today’s average EV price is far out of reach for the average consumer. However, particularly if you are shopping for a Tesla, today’s prices are likely as good as they are going to get at least in the short term. If your heart is set on an electric car, where pricing is concerned, now may be as good a time to act as any.
Revitalized tax credit – For many, the best time to buy an electric vehicle was before some of the new tax-credit regulations went into effect. However, we are now in 2023. The good news is that the new rules once again make some electric cars eligible. For instance, under the old rules, GM and Tesla had capped out, exceeding the 200,000 EV sales limit. The new rules eliminate that cap, making Tesla and GM electric car models eligible for up to $7,500 tax credit again if consumers meet the price and buyer-income limits.
Shaky economy – We aren’t economists and certainly don’t have a crystal ball. We have no better idea than you what the economy will do over the next 18 months or two years. However, if we were to lay down a bet, it would be that the economy will worsen before it gets better. If we are playing the odds correctly, that means demand for all new cars, including electric vehicles, will drop, inventories will increase, and, even if the MSRPs of electric cars don’t go down, dealers will be willing to negotiate lower prices.
Timing – Regardless of which model you may be considering, now is not the best time to buy a new car, and really, any new car, electric car or otherwise. Prices are high, interest rates are high, and the supply of most new models is still tight. If you don’t absolutely need a new car right now, you may do better staying on the sidelines for a while.
Tax credits versus rebates – Although the new regulations removed the sales cap, allowing many EVs that meet the new price limits to qualify for up to a $7,500 tax credit, you might want to wait a year. Why? Because on Jan. 1, 2024, you can take that $7,500 credit as a cash rebate. That is, the dealer will use it to reduce the transaction price of your electric car of choice if it qualifies under the new rules, and if your income level allows you to qualify. It will follow the same price limit rules of today’s tax credit, but it means you will get up to a $7,500 break on the upfront cost. You can finance less, meaning smaller monthly payments and less interest paid over the life of the loan.
Supply and variety – We can’t predict when the supply of electric vehicle models will significantly increase. However, an increase to more normal numbers is inevitable. When that happens, dealers will be more open to negotiating deals. Similarly, at the time of this writing, 40 all-new EVs are scheduled as 2023 models. These will come from a variety of manufacturers like Jeep, Nissan, and Subaru, as well as Fisker, Toyota, Cadillac, and Mercedes-Benz. If you can’t find what you want now, the odds are good you will be able to by the end of 2023 or sometime in 2024.
If budgeting was our number one concern, we’d wait a year. We think the supply will increase, transaction prices will go down, and we like the idea of getting the government’s incentive of up to $7,500 upfront on a new vehicle. Even if meeting a budget wasn’t an issue, we like the bigger variety of models another year will bring. It’s a roll of the dice on what the interest rates will do. However, with many models taking several months or a year to arrive after putting down a deposit, you may not avoid an escalating interest rate if it continues rising.
On the other hand, if we were in a position where cost wasn’t a factor and we could wait until filing our income tax to take advantage of tax credits, we might buy now. This is particularly true if we had our eye on a Tesla Model Y or any EV models currently on sale.
Monitoring utilised car or truck rates is ample to give anybody whiplash.
Given that the commence of the pandemic and the resulting disruptions to new car or truck supply chains 1st despatched charges soaring, used motor vehicle prices posted their most significant once-a-year improve on record – up 45{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} in the 12 months ending in June 2021, in accordance to the Shopper Value Index – before swinging to a 12-thirty day period fall of 8.8{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} in the most recent studying for December.
That was the most important 12-month plunge in charges for used cars due to the fact June 2009, when Normal Motors and Chrysler have been equally in individual bankruptcy proceedings and the financial state was hemorrhaging a 50 percent-million jobs a thirty day period.
“It was a fully wild ride,” mentioned Ivan Drury, director of insights at Edmunds.com Inc., an on line means for stock and details on cars.
Information from Edmunds demonstrates the common rate of a used car obtain in December at $29,533, down approximately $1,600 from the history superior of $31,095 arrived at in April 2022. Today’s common employed automobile rate is about the very same as the common new vehicle cost as not long ago as 2010.
Whilst the charges of late design utilised automobiles are down only 5{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} off their peak according in accordance to Edmunds, the selling price of older utilised automobiles, those 5 several years or more mature, have fallen 15{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} or additional from their peaks early in 2022.
Industry experts say motives for the drop contain better curiosity fees that make it additional expensive to finance a automobile obtain, restricting need. CarMax
(KMX), the nation’s largest pure used vehicle vendor, has warned that the combination of superior prices and higher fascination fees is creating an affordability challenge for lots of customers, hurting overall need.
But the major explanation for the fall in employed vehicle costs is the elevated offer of new autos.
It was the deficiency of new auto inventory that drove up charges. Pieces shortages, particularly for computer system chips, experienced choked off output of new automobiles in significantly of 2022, creating the cheapest degree of total-12 months US new car gross sales since 2011.
The reduced supply of new vehicles caused an even larger leap in the ordinary rate of made use of cars, as customers who would otherwise invest in new motor vehicles turned to the employed automobile industry.
“At just one level it seemed that every person who was heading to purchase new ended up shopping for made use of,” explained Greg Markus, executive vice president of AutoLenders, parent corporation of New Jersey’s greatest applied auto dealership chain.
That provided rental motor vehicle providers, which ahead of the pandemic ordinarily bought about 10{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} or more new cars for every calendar year. With limited stock of automobiles to sell, automakers effectively stopped generating decrease-priced fleet profits, and even rental automobile firms have been forced to flip to the utilised auto market place.
All that has started out to change in latest months. Automakers are reporting extra materials of the chips they will need, and are manufacturing and advertising more vehicles, which include a return of fleet profits. General, gross sales have been up 9{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} in the fourth quarter as opposed to a year ago, and approximately 6{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} higher than in the third quarter, in accordance to Cox Automotive. And with additional purchasers acquiring the new autos they want, that indicates lessen desire for employed automobiles.
Specialists say part of the decline in used car price ranges is that the cost improves were not sustainable and ended up partly driven by potential buyers at utilised motor vehicle auctions overpaying for the confined offer of employed vehicles.
“There was nowhere for these rates to go but down,” claimed Markus.
There could be far more declines in utilized automobile costs in the months in advance, as new car or truck inventories go on to make. One particular matter that could set a ground under the made use of car costs: late product used vehicles will likely be in shorter provide offered the reduced new car or truck manufacturing around the very last three decades.
“The supply situation is however grim,” mentioned Markus. Because of that, “I do not think we’re getting down to 2019 amounts,” he additional.
The run-up in utilised automobile selling prices was a important driver in the nation’s in general inflation fee, including about a full percentage stage to the all round boost in consumer costs from April of 2021 via Could of 2022. Now it is a factor encouraging to provide down the pace of inflation, shaving much more than a third of a place off the general fee in December.
This is clearly good news for those people seeking or needing to obtain a applied vehicle, nevertheless it can have a damaging outcome on vehicle prospective buyers by decreasing the benefit of automobile they hope to trade in. Edmunds displays the normal trade-in benefit in December down practically $3,000, or 11{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809}, to $22,605, from the report high strike in June of 2022.
That fall in the benefit of trade-ins could also be a headwind on auto charges by cutting down what purchasers are in a position to pay.
