“This is the first study to assess associations of ultra-processed food consumption with many different types of cancers, including ovarian cancer,” Dr. Vamos explained, adding: “We need further studies from other populations to confirm these findings.”

“However, previous studies suggest that diets high in unhealthy fats and low in vegetables may increase the risk of ovarian cancer,” she said.

“Ultra-processed foods may also promote inflammation that could contribute to cancer risk. Furthermore, some potentially cancer-causing agents such as acrylamide, which may be generated during processing, have been implicated.”

Medical News Today also spoke with Dr. Steve Vasilev, a board certified integrative gynecologic oncologist and medical director of Integrative Gynecologic Oncology at Providence Saint John’s Health Center and Professor at Saint John’s Cancer Institute in Santa Monica, California, about this study and how ultra-processed foods may cause increased cancer risk. Dr. Vasilev was not involved in the study.

He said the “old school thought” was that various toxins from food processing, as well as added preservatives, lead to genetic mutations that cause cancer.

“That’s probably true to some extent. However, we now know since the Human Genome Project that there’s something called epigenetics, which basically is a study that looks at how genes are turned on and off. For example, if tumor suppressor genes are turned off, it will lead to diseases like cancer,” Dr. Vasilev explained.

However, he said that even if a person is born with the BRCA1 gene that increases their risk for developing breast and ovarian cancer, that does not necessarily mean that person will get one of those diseases. The epigenetics, he explained, leads to that gene being switched on or off in the body.

“So you do have a proactive ability to modulate which genes are turned on and off in your body. And what influences those, some of it is literally the toxins that accumulate from the preservatives and things like that in ultra-processed foods,” Dr. Vasilev added.

So how can people improve their diet to help decrease their cancer risk?

Kate Cohen, a registered dietitian at the Ellison Institute for Transformative Medicine at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California, told Medical News Today that while correlation is not causation, medical experts know that around 50{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} of cancers can be prevented through diet and lifestyle changes.

“Hence diet is a controllable risk factor that every single one of us can and should take ownership of. You can’t control the physiology of how your body responds to food, but you can control what food you put into your body.”

Stroke is the second-leading cause of death around the world, and its incidence increased substantially between 1990 and 2019 globally, including a 70{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} increase in the number of incident, or first-ever, strokes.

Some studies suggest that higher estrogen levels may protect against stroke. Research shows, for example, that young women have a lower stroke risk than men, and that this risk increases after menopause, when estrogen production reduces.

Understanding more about stroke risk factors could improve preventative care and lead to improved treatment options.

Recently, researchers examined the link between lifetime cumulative estrogen exposure and stroke risk among postmenopausal women in China.

They found that women with the highest lifetime estrogen exposure had the lowest stroke risk.

The study appeared in Neurology.

For the study, researchers examined healthcare data from 122,939 postmenopausal women without prior stroke at baseline from the China Kadoorie Biobank study. Participants were aged between 40 and 79 years and were followed for an average of 8.9 years.

They were asked to provide information about their reproductive history, including the age of puberty onset, the age at which menopause started, and the number of pregnancies they had. They also provided information on their use of contraceptive pills.

The women were then split into four groups according to their reproductive lifespan (RL), or the number of years between puberty onset and menopause. Those in the shortest RL group had up to 31 reproductive years, whereas those in the longest RL group had 36 years or more.

The researchers also collected data on stroke incidence. During the study, they recorded 15,139 cases of new-onset stroke.

The researchers found that 13.2{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} of women in the longest RL group had a stroke, compared to 12.6{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} of women in the shortest RL group.

However, after adjusting for factors including smoking, age, and physical activity, they found that, in fact, participants in the longest RL group had a 5{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} lower risk for all types of stroke than those in the shortest group.

In particular, when they looked at different stroke subtypes, they found that those in the longest RL group had a 13{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} lower risk for intracerebral hemorrhage compared to those in the shortest RL group. Intracerebral hemorrhage is the most fatal kind of stroke which occurs when blood vessels burst in the brain.

Women in the longest RL group also had a 5{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} lower risk for ischemic stroke — when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted or reduced — compared to the shortest group.

The researchers also found that oral contraceptive pill use duration, which is linked to increased estrogen levels, was associated with a lower risk of stroke.

Those with fewer stillbirths, miscarriages, and terminations were also less likely to develop stroke.

“The link between reproductive lifespan, endogenous/ exogenous estrogens and risk of stroke in women is poorly understood,” Dr. Bharti Manwani, assistant professor of vascular neurology with McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, not involved in the study, told Medical News Today.

“Preclinical studies have shown estrogen to be a profound neuroprotective agent, while clinical trials of estrogen replacement therapy in postmenopausal women failed to show benefit,” she noted.

Dr. Alex Polyakov, associate professor and gynecologist at the University of Melbourne in Australia, also not involved in the study, agreed that the exact mechanisms behind estrogen’s effects on stroke risk are not fully understood.

He added that: “Further research is needed to better understand the biological, behavioral, and social factors that may contribute to the link. Some potential mechanisms include the ability of estrogen to influence blood flow and the formation of blood clots, which can play a role in stroke risk.”

“Estrogen may also have protective effects on the brain and cardiovascular system. Estrogen is known to have a number of beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system, such as improving blood lipid levels, decreasing oxidative stress, and promoting blood vessel health. The relationship between estrogen levels and stroke risk is complex and can vary depending on various factors such as age, genetics, lifestyle, and hormone replacement therapy.”

In the Neurology paper, the researchers concluded that cumulative estrogen exposure from reproductive factors could be a useful indicator of a woman’s risk of different types of stroke after menopause.

We asked study author Dr. Peige Song of the School of Public Health at Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Hangzhou, China, about the study’s limitations.

She told us that “[s]ome limitations of the study include potential recall bias in the collection of reproductive factor information, and the inability to control for other factors that may impact estrogen exposure and stroke risk, such as genetics, early life experiences, and diet.”

“The major limitation of this study is that estrogen exposure was measured indirectly rather than through direct blood levels,” Dr. Adi Iyer, a neurosurgeon and neurointerventional surgeon at the Pacific Neuroscience Institute at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, CA, not involved in the study, also told MNT.

Dr. Polyakov added as the study is observational, it can only establish a correlation and not causation. He further noted that the study was conducted only on Chinese patients, and so its findings may not apply to people from other populations.

“The implications of this study for the future of women’s health are very intriguing, and more studies regarding the cerebrovascular protection value of a higher lifetime estrogen exposure is needed,” Dr. George B. Branning, board-certified physician specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, from Biote Medical Faculty, not involved in the study, told MNT.

“Although hormone replacement therapy [HRT] is usually suggested for patients who want relief of their symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, weight gain, and mood changes, studies have shown that HRT is essential to lifetime functional bone health, sexual health, and cognitive protection. These new study results indicate we can perhaps add stroke protection to this growing list of benefits,” he added.

Dr. Manwani agreed that it is essential to know that longer cumulative estrogen exposure decreases stroke risk in postmenopausal women. She noted, however, that age at puberty onset or menopause is beyond a woman’s control.

“Therefore, it is important for clinicians to risk-stratify women with decreased estrogen exposure/ lower reproductive lifespan and work on controlling/ treating their other modifiable vascular risk factors aggressively, for example, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, atrial fibrillation, diabetes mellitus, smoking,” she explained.

“[These findings] also open up another debate about the role of estrogen in stroke. Is it good or bad? More studies on estrogen replacement therapy are needed to identify if increasing the estrogen exposure by use of hormone therapy would be beneficial,” she concluded.

Now, researchers from the University of New South Wales in Sydney have found that omega-3 from seafood is associated with a moderately lower risk of chronic kidney disease and a slower decline in kidney function.

The study was published in the BMJ.

The study was a part of the Fatty Acids and Outcomes Research (FORCE) consortium of studies. FORCE was set up to understand the relationships between fatty acids from our diet and metabolic processes, using data from multiple studies.

“This is an interesting study of diet potentially having a direct effect on disease progression. […] The methodology of this pooled analysis is good—more precise and avoids measurement errors related to self-report.”

The researchers analyzed data from 19 studies from 12 countries to assess the association between long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) and CKD.

They estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) at baseline and follow-up visits and defined incident CKD as eGFR that decreased to below 60ml/min/1.73 m2. eGFR measures how well the kidneys are removing waste from the body. The healthy range is 90-120 ml/min/1.73 m2.

The 25,570 participants were ages 49–77 years at the beginning of the study. Overall, 4,944 (19.3{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809}) developed incident CKD during the follow-up period of, on average, 11 years.

People who had higher levels of seafood-derived omega-3 in their diet had an 8{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} lower risk of incident CKD. Those with total seafood n-3 PUFA levels in the highest fifth had a 13{cfdf3f5372635aeb15fd3e2aecc7cb5d7150695e02bd72e0a44f1581164ad809} lower risk of CKD compared with those in the lowest fifth.

The researchers found this protective association with three individual omega-3s from seafood, including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and docosapentaenoic acid (DPA).

Dr. Shree Mulay, CEO and nephrologist at The Kidney Experts, PLLC, who was not involved in the study, welcomed the study, but urged some caution, especially in people who already have CKD.

“It’s exciting to explore if eating fattier seafood could lead to increased PUFA intake and slower CKD progression. However, it’s essential to be wary as many of these fish are packed with phosphorus — a mineral that nephrologists work hard to keep low in dialysis patients and those with advanced CKD,” she told Medical News Today.

Plant-derived omega-3s, such as alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which is found mainly in nuts and seeds, had no effect on CKD risk.

Now, a new study published in JAMA Network Openexplores this link between psychological distress and dementia.

The study was conducted by researchers from the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, the University of Helsinki, and the University of Eastern Finland.

Previous studies, such as one published in 2022, concluded that individuals with depression levels that were increasingly severe, chronically high, or chronically low had a higher likelihood of developing dementia compared to individuals without depression or with decreasing depression symptoms.

Other studies have found that anxiety, vital exhaustion, and psychological stress are associated with a later onset of dementia.

On the other hand, a 28-year follow-up study on the relationship between depression and dementia found that depression was mostly caused by dementia rather than dementia being caused by depression.

The researchers also acknowledged that their measurement of psychological distress was not based on a validated multi-item questionnaire but on several single-item measures for different symptoms of psychological distress. However, these measures correlate significantly and show a consistent pattern of association with dementia.

Moreover, the researchers acknowledged that there was no available information about traumatic brain injury, hearing impairment, and low social contact—three established risk factors for dementia.

Dr. Sulkava added that study participants were asked to report their current symptoms of psychological distress only once, and this leads to a lack of “longitudinal perspective” for the symptoms.

Dr. Ernstsen pointed out that information about social isolation or marital status was not included. Research has found that being married protects against dementia.

“We also know that cardiovascular disease is associated with both mental health and dementia risk, but it was only the presence of diabetes that was adjusted for in the present study,” Dr. Ernstsen added.
