Visa, Mastercard suspend all operations in Russia, ‘effective immediately’

Financial products and services organizations Visa and Mastercard declared Saturday they are suspending  business in Russia in response to the country’s invasion of neighboring Ukraine. 

“Productive promptly, Visa will perform with its consumers and partners in Russia to cease all Visa transactions more than the coming times,” Visa reported in a push release. “When comprehensive, all transactions initiated with Visa cards issued in Russia will no lengthier get the job done exterior the nation and any Visa playing cards issued by monetary institutions outdoors of Russia will no more time get the job done within the Russian Federation.”

Al Kelly, chairman and main government officer of Visa Inc., explained in the assertion that the company feels “compelled to act” pursuing Russia’s “unprovoked invasion of Ukraine” and the “unacceptable situations that we have witnessed.”

“We regret the impression this will have on our valued colleagues, and on the consumers, partners, retailers and cardholders we provide in Russia,” Kelly claimed. “This war and the ongoing risk to peace and stability demand we respond in line with our values.”

Mastercard claimed in a statement Saturday that it also produced the final decision to suspend companies in Russia owing to the “unparalleled nature of the latest conflict.”
