“Ground Chuck” has been grounded for the rest of the 2021 World Series.
The legend of Charlie Morton grew on Tuesday night, when the Braves righty took suffered a fractured fibula while throwing a pitch, proceeded to get three more outs and hitting 96 mph on the gun before exiting the game.
The Braves rewarded Morton’s toughness with an ambush of Astros pitching, scoring five runs in the first three innings. They wouldn’t look back from that, securing a 6-2 win over Houston in Game 1.
Now, the Astros hope to salvage the second game the 2021 Fall Classic on Wednesday night, and they’ll turn to righty José Urquidy for the start. Urquidy’s last start in the postseason was a forgettable one: In ALCS Game 3, Urquidy allowed six runs (five earned) on five hits over 1 2/3 innings pitched in the loss.
On the other hand — quite literally — Braves starter Max Fried is looking to right the ship, himself. The Dodgers got the best of Fried and the Braves in NLCS Game 5, as the lefty gave up five runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings pitched, this after a dazzling performance in great performance in Game 1.
