Texas A&M Students Attend New York Fashion Week

Texas A&M Students Attend New York Fashion Week

Two Texas A&M University seniors got a behind-the-scenes peek at the business side of high fashion at New York Fashion Week in New York City last month.

Nichole Martin ’22, a supply chain management major from College Station, and Cassidy Bryant ’23, a marketing major from Pearland, were part of UofNYFW, an academic enrichment program provided through a partnership between Mays Business School and its Center for Retailing Studies, trademark licensing agency CLC and fashion leader IMG.

The program gave about 20 college students from 10 universities across the country entry into runway shows with London-based fashion house Hardware LDN and top Korean designer Son Jung Wan, as well as networking opportunities and panel discussions with industry leaders.

“My favorite part of the experience was meeting all of the different students that were just as excited to be there and had similar interests,” said Bryant, who is working on a specialization in retail buying and management as part of her major and plans to work in product management or brand development in corporate luxury retail.

Martin enjoyed learning about the haute couture/runway side of fashion. She aspires to work in product development or sourcing and perhaps have an online boutique or similar business of her own.

“It was shocking how quick the actual shows are, five to eight minutes, tops!” she said. “It was fascinating to see that the celebrities and fashion icons we see in the media every day do, in fact, exist but really are just normal people when you see them in person.”

Martin, Bryant and the other students also attended two NYFW: The Talks sessions, including a panel entitled The New Standards of Beauty and Creation, and a discussion on sustainability and the current fascination with resale fashion. Additionally, the students participated in a Q&A with representatives from IMG, as well as a backstage tour of the production and execution of a fashion show at Spring Studios.

Participating students chronicled their experiences through social media using #UofNYFW and were asked to share what they learned with other students at their home campuses.

Both Bryant and Martin got involved in New York Fashion Week through the M.B. Zale Leadership Scholars program and related organizations such as the Student Retailing Association.

New York Fashion Week, founded in 1943, is one of the world’s “Big 4” fashion shows, along with those in Paris, Milan and London. It is held every February and September for the purpose of introducing the latest international fashion collections to buyers, the media and the public.

Even nearby cities enjoy from Austin’s tech reputation: Samsung is creating a huge plant in Taylor, up the highway about 40 miles from downtown Austin.

But infrastructure and necessities like potable drinking water are essential to supporting enterprise, and the Texas cash is owning difficulties keeping its consuming drinking water cleanse, all over again.

What channel is Texas vs. Oklahoma on today? Time, TV schedule for 2021 Red River Rivalry game

Once again, the Red River Showdown between Texas and Oklahoma will likely determine at least one of the participants of the Big 12 championship game — perhaps for the last time.

It’s no secret the Longhorns and Sooners are jumping ship, as their announced defection to the SEC over the summer quickly became the college football storyline of the offseason, spurring renewed conference realignment battles and dwarfing talks of NIL deals and an expanded College Football Playoff.

Now, here’s hoping the game is as entertaining as the storylines these teams have created.

BENDER: Will Bijan Robinson channel past Horns’ Heisman winners in Red River Showdown?

No. 6 Oklahoma is the betting favorite heading into this one, boasting an undefeated, 5-0 record and top 10 ranking by the AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll. But the Sooners haven’t looked anything like world-beaters, fighting to four wins of only one possession over Tulane — which played as the home team in Norman after getting displaced by Hurricane Ida — Nebraska, West Virginia and Kansas State. Their only win that didn’t follow that formula was against FCS opponent Western Carolina in a 76-0 slaughter.

Spencer Rattler has played well enough, but looks nothing like the Heisman Trophy front runner people expected before the start of the season. He has completed 122 of 160 passes (76.3 percent) for 1,260 yards and 10 touchdowns to four interceptions. Still, he has only passed for multiple touchdowns in two games all season, against Western Carolina (five) and Kansas State (two). He’ll need to have a big game on Saturday, and will need some additional help from running back Kennedy Brooks: The fifth-year running back has yet to eclipse the 100-yard mark in a game this season, but has an impressive 5.9 yards-per-carry average en route to 318 yards and four scores.

Conversely, look for No. 21 Texas’ offense to run through running back Bijan Robinson, who ranks first nationally in yards from scrimmage (819), second in rushing yards (652) and has seven rushing touchdowns on top of an absurd 6.2 yards-per-carry average. Don’t overlook quarterback Casey Thompson, either; the son of former Oklahoma quarterback Charles Thompson has 707 passing yards and nine touchdowns to three interceptions this year. The Longhorns can’t afford another loss this year after getting hammered by Arkansas 40-21 in Week 2.

WIth that, Sporting News breaks down how to watch the Red River Showdown between No. 21 Texas and No. 6 Oklahoma in Dallas:
