The Mavericks find themselves in a familiar position ahead of Sunday’s pivotal matchup with the Warriors. Dallas was down 2-0 against Phoenix in the second round of the 2022 NBA Playoffs, and now are stuck in the same hole against Golden State after blowing a double-digit lead in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals.
The key to Game 3 for the Mavs will be sustaining their defensive effort. The Warriors shot 61.0 percent in the second half of Game 2 and 78.9 percent in the fourth quarter on their way to a 126-117 win.
“We play defense when we play offense, and we play no defense when we can’t score,” Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said. “That’s something that we have to get better at this time of the year. You can get away with it in the regular season, but just understanding the defensive principles, we just have to do better.”
Golden State, meanwhile, has to be feeling good considering its history with 2-0 leads. The Warriors are 14-1 when holding a 2-0 advantage since Steve Kerr took over as the team’s head coach in 2014-15.
